Valve reveals the Steam Deck's packaging, complete with Portal references and suggestions...

What just happened? Valve has revealed what buyers of the Steam Deck will find wrapped around their handheld gaming device when it finally arrives. In what is the antithesis of Apple’s elaborate packaging, the company has opted for a generic brown box.

Valve writes that it recently completed its DV (Design Validation) manufacturing build of the Steam Deck, which it will be using for additional testing and developer kits. DV is the final prototype build, meaning the finished consumer unit will come with only minor changes.

Valve also gave us a sneak peek at the Steam Deck’s packaging. It’s not much more than a brown cardboard box, but looking closely reveals some icons on the side reference the company’s beloved Portal games.

The inside of the box is equally understated. However, it does contain a list of locations in various languages where the Steam Deck can be enjoyed. These include “on the toilet,” which, let’s be honest, is where most people will use the miniature PC. It also mentions the subway and a Ferris wheel, both of which could be dangerous gaming spots, depending on where you live.

We also get to see the contents of the box. The carrying case for the Steam Deck itself looks pretty nice, though this is the one buyers of the 64GB and 256GB models will receive; the 512GB version comes with its own special case.

Finally, there are some instructions and a USB Type-C power supply—it seems Valve isn’t going down the same route that most big smartphone companies are taking by actually including a charger.

The first Steam Decks were supposed to arrive this month. Unfortunately, like so many other things, the chip shortage scuppered those plans. We’ll now be waiting until February before they’re in the hands of gamers.

In other Steam Deck news this week, Valve said it wasn’t interested in making games exclusively for the handset as it doesn’t make sense.

Steam controllers were amazing and literally made the greatest strides for PC controller use
Index is still one of the best HMDs and the controllers knuckles are one of the best, grant it they had drift issues but that was an industry wide problem with that manufacturer.
..and now there is the steam deck...
The steam machines they never really made they only licensed it to other manufacturers like Alienware and such, grant it the ide failed but Big picture mode made it easy to build HTPC gaming machines that worked well for couch gaming.
Steam link was years ahead of server based game streaming solutions and probably helped lead more to others doing interesting devices and solutions.

So I am not really sure what you are referring to exactly, their hardware has lead to so many industry changes.

What are you talking about, the steam controller was objectively dreadful. Reviewers slammed it, users slammed it, it went on sale for just £5 and it still didn’t get sold. You may like it but it was a poor product by practically every measure.

The index is good, it’s literally the only decent hardware Valve have ever made but it cost so much that it was a failure from a product perspective, considering how much cheaper it’s competitors were.

The steam link is atrocious as well, if you had ever used an Nvidia shield you would understand how in home streaming should be done. The link does work but my god you bash your head against the wall.

I’m genuinely shocked that there are people who apparently think the steam pad is good. It’s probably the worst controller ever made. I mean they don’t even sell on eBay. My local game is selling them for £3 second hand in a bargain bin and they don’t even budge. They’ve been there for months!

I’m with you, now you mention it I think about it Valve actually don’t have a good track record. I don’t even think the index is that good, I’d rather have an Oculus Quest 2, which is actually reasonably priced and is higher resolution, oh and it can work as a standalone unit. As a product the index is poor simply based on its ridiculous cost, not even Nvidia or Intel markup their products compared to the competition by that much.

What I think it is is that people love to bum lick Valve for some reason. The fact is the company hasn’t done anything decent for years. They haven’t made games for a long long time and that’s the only thing they were ever any good at. All they seem to be doing is trying and failing to push people onto their own OS where you can’t run launchers made by other companies. And this is why the steam deck will let users down. Sure itl support windows but most people won’t bother with that. Oh and it’s enormous and has a frankly laughable 720p 60hz LCD, even the now old PS vita had an OLED at least.

Valve do make rubbish hardware and the steam deck is more than likely no different. I pity the people who preordered that thing.

The controller was not dreadful, it's has a large community, the major issue for most new babies was the setup, if you didn't take the time to set it up properly then yeah it was dreadful, the tech in software side on behalf of steams controller support is what made it successful, aif you need to understand more there are a handful of YouTubers that did videos explaining what it did to the table. Reviewers slammed it because they didn't know what they had and it created an echo chamber, people don't like new things, but it was the only controller to even remotely come close to the accuracy of a mouse and keyboard in comp. Fps games. Also it made difficult fighting game motions easier due to analog controllers not being precise enough.

Really? The Xbox controller is and was always laughable with it's support, in fact it only got good because of the steam controller and the legacy it left behind on the software side.

Also I will add 3dfx hammerhead fx was the king of PC controllers even before the PS and Xbox controller were PC compatible they literally took features from that controller.
