Inactive When browsing new tabs will open up to random sites

So I have had this problem lately were ill be browsing the internet, on firefox, and out of nowhere a new tab will open and bring me to some random site.It wasnt that troublesome at first but now it's just annoying and want it to stop. What i want to know is...

1) Is this a virus?-I use Avira free AntiVir
2) How do i make it stop?-with simplest steps please

i have no idea wht im doing so if u can make the steps as easy as possible it would help(i dont know tht much about computers)
