Windows XP goes to Black Screen After Logo, on iMac w/bootcamp

I'm running Windows XP on a partitioned hard drive using boot camp. The Windows XP logo displays, with the little status bar, then it goes to a black screen and hangs, when I normally log-in. I suspect a virus because I (stupidly) downloadedb some retro games the night before this problem occured. Windows XP has been running fine since I bought this system in 2007.

Mac OS side of partition works fine. Will boot in "safe" mode, "safe" with networking, but not VGA mode. I tried downloading and reintsalling my video-card driver (nVidia GeForce 7600 GT). No luck. Ran Norton Anti-Virus and other anti-MalWare programs in safe mode. Nothing expect a tracking cookie detected and deleted.

I have no idea where my original Windows XP disc is, but this is a legitimate copy.

Very frustrated!

Computer specs: iMac: Intel Core 2 Duo (2.16 Ghz); 2 GB RAM, GeForce 7600 GT (256 MB) graphics card, running windows XP service pack 2 on one partition, Mac OS X on other side.

Please help -- I have been all over the net and others seem to have similar problems, but haven't seen a solution that matches my specifics.

Windows XP goes black on my MacBook Pro with Boot Camp

Mine also goes black just like you describe when I don't have a 2nd external VGA monitor plugged in to the miniDV port on the side of my MacBook Pro. But, when I'm at home and connect the VGA external monitor, the Windows XP boots up just fine. I suspect it has to do with the Display settings in the Control Panel on the Windows XP side.
