Please add some specifics.

Using the XP CD, does this mean that it worked to the point where you keyed in "enter" to begin the reloading XP? "Did not do anything" meaning it went to never-neverland or perhaps did it come back with some other indication that a viable 'windows' was not found?

Adding system specs to your profile would be helpful, as well. Is your primary HDD a SATA drive? Is this a desktop or laptop?

"OS not found" often points to the HDD. Is the Bios confirming that the HDD is being detected?

Erratic behavior often points to the PSU or to the memory.

my computer is desktop and usually when i try putting window 98 boot cd it loads it up but whenever i put the xp cd it doesnt do anything! it just keeps on displaying that windows operating system was not found.

My computer has 192 mega bytes of ram and 1.4 ghz cpu

It sounds to me like you had Windows 98 installed on your computer initially and then did and XP upgrade. If that is so, upgrade discs aren't bootable. You'll have to put in the 98 boot cd and re-load that operating system, then once you've re-installed it, put in the XP upgrade disc to redo the upgrade.

The Problem is that when ever i try to reboot into windows 98, at first it works but then the installation suddenly stops and says that i dont have Ms-Dos or i think it was Dos-Prompt. i dont know but i know it was one of those. is there anyway i can fix that?

Win98 needs these files <Hidden, System, Read-only>:
-HSR C:\IO.SYS
-HSR C:\MSDOS.SYS

Using Win98 Startup FD, the following command copies the above files to c:\
SYS c:\

HOWEVER, it appears that your situation is dual boot and I do not have an understanding how boot loader (ntldr) will accept this action.

Your first post in this thread mentioned 'os not found'. Your last post amounts to about the same thing. This makes the hard drive suspect in my opinion. If it is not hardware, then something else is corrupting the Win98 OS files.
