Microsoft has said that some 40 games for the Xbox 360 will be available by the end of the year, with many more to follow. Currently, some 160 titles are under development for the new games console, which was unveiled just recently. This includes Need For Speed: Most Wanted, Dead or Alive 4, Madden NFL 06, and the best-selling Final Fantasy XI.

Microsoft tried to alleviate the concerns of others worried over the number of launch titles by announcing that between 25 and 40 titles will have shipped by the end of this year for the Xbox 360. Company representatives showed footage from such titles as Lost Oddyssey, Project Gotham Racing 3, Ghost Recon 3, NBA 2K6, Elder Scrolls: Oblivion, Call of Duty 2, and Kameo: Elements of Power.

Meanwhile, it has also been confirmed that the new Xbox will be compatible with older Xbox games, despite earlier fears to the contrary. However, it is not clear whether all original Xbox games will be supported, or merely a subset of them, comprising the most popular titles.

The Xbox 360 is due to go on sale in the US for the holiday season, which starts after Thanksgiving. It will be released in Europe and Asia shortly afterwards. The price of the game system has not yet been announced.
