In Q2 of this year, IBM's UNIX server revenue was 31 percent of the $4.3bn market, with HP at 30 percent and Sun 29.5 percent. Sun's UNIX market position has therefore slipped, but the company is still shipping more units than anyone else. That is, of course, according to analyst research firm IDC.

However, figures released from Gartner show things in a different light. Here, Sun has 33 percent of a $4.2bn (£2.3bn) market, with HP at 29 percent and IBM at 28 percent.
