Perhaps in response to AMD's recent media play about their Barcelona quad-core, Intel is soon expected to release more details on their planned quad-core desktop processor. The Kentsfield Core has already had a lot of information revealed on what it will offer, including that it will start off as a 2.66GHz CPU aimed at the high-end gaming market (and likely the high-end workstation market as well). Kentsfield may be called the Core 2 Extreme, keeping the naming convention somewhat in-line with the earlier dual-core Intel CPUs. Of course, while the Core 2 Extremes will be compatible with the 965 and 975 chipsets, it seems a change in the motherboard power supply is required, meaning anyone hoping to upgrade a Core 2 to an Extreme may be faced with replacing their motherboard.
