Benchmarks: Overclocking Performance

The Gigabyte R9 280X WindForce 3X OC delivered the best core overclock reaching 1200MHz. However, the HIS R9 280X iPower IceQ X² Turbo was able to deliver the same performance with its 1195/1700MHz overclock.

The weakest overclocker was the Asus R9 280X DirectCU II TOP with a core clock of 1160MHz, though its GDDR5 memory hit an amazing 1800MHz. The Sapphire Vapor-X Tri-X OC R9 280X was also weak when it came to custom overclocking performance with only 1165MHz on the core. That said, its memory was good for 1730MHz, the second highest GDDR5 overclock we achieved.

Finally, MSI's R9 280X Gaming card overclocked quite well with a core speed of 1185MHz.

The custom overclocked R9 280X graphics cards delivered between 59 and 61fps, which was at least 5fps more than a standard R9 280X. This 9% plus performance boost is especially worthwhile when average frame rates are below 60fps.
