had a hunt around the net and found the best way to fix the DLL problem was to do a system restore

All I did was restore to a point that I could get back onto the computer. Without doing this I could not do want you wanted me to do. As a matter of fact, I did less than you wanted me to do because I didn't know if one of these processes actually caused the dll corruption.
