    Continuing Computer glitches

Hope I can use this thread to mention another odd glitch;-

Sometimes when I shut down, I get a banner titled "Sharing"which goes on to say; "The following users are connected to your computer *********** continuing will disconnect them, do you want to continue YES/NO"

As I have said, it's not my laptop, it's on loan, & the owner may well have shared it with somebody, but I don't know, & we are not exactly on speaking terms, [yes, HIM!] so could it be that,
do you think, or is it something more sinister?
The symbols representing the person [?] connected vary, the ones yesterday read as follows; "Guest [\\ CERICIER]"

Maurice, it sounds as if you've got some trouble there. Number 1, we don't know that the machine wasn't intentionally shared out for the benefit of your "friend" who loaned it to you. Number 2, not knowing exactly what is shared out leaves it open that anything you have saved to the hard drive is not secure. And Number 3, do we know what else could potentially be on this "loaner" computer.......eg. keyloggers, etc.

Be very careful my friend. I may be jumping to conclusions here and possibly being a bit paranoid but I think others here might tend to agree with me.

To respond to Maurice... Windows 9x and ME are notorious for not closing file shares.. even after the window is closed. This is indeed an annoying glitch. But masque points out properly, be sure you have control of your shares- remove them, pw protect them.

Hello, Goalie, haven't had a response from you before, welcome.

You're saying that it is probably an innocent glitch, I have this minute sent an e-mail to the owner of this loaned machine, [my techie repairer] innocently asking him if I am harming his laptop by shutting down whilst the person is apparently connected. I did it that way, so as not to antagonise him further [have a look at all my posts on this subject, & you'll understand why, this has been going on for weeks]

    Nice to "meet" you, Maurice.

Thought you guys would like to see the last email sent to my techie, & his response;-Maurice. [as you can see, grammar & spelling are NOT his strong points! --------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Sorry maurice, i'm still waiting to here from colin but as soon as i have any news i'll let you know.

    >I have heard absolutely nothing from this Colin, I thought you said he would ring me, I appreciate that he has other work of course, but now this is getting into the realms of utter frustration, you've got to admit I've been very patient.
    >I can understand that you have to explore every avenue, but enough is enough, & if he doesn't find a solution in the next seven days, as far as I'm concerned, that is it, after all;- March 26th-----June 11th?, ludicrous.

    Maurice,
careful please when you publish emails like that. You should not show anyone's full email-address, ever heard of spam?

Oops, yes, of course, thanks, I'm so angry, I wasn't thinking, I should have deleted the addresses before sending, I know. blimey, you picked up my post quick enough, I'd just that second sent it!, guess you'll be watching the footie tomorrow, me?, I'll be bored to tears, I'm no sports fan!

As a matter of fact I've recently been infected with netsky q, + a couple of trojans, which I deleted via the vault on my AVG, then ran a check, all clear now.

RBS; Told you Iwas getting old, forgot I could retro- edit, [done that] you saved my bacon, I think, thanks! Maurice.

PS, not TOO much of the blackstuff in front of the box, watching England lose,...... oops, did I get that wrong?

    Just another "lovely" glitch!....... huh!!
Frankly I don't know why I'm sending this, as my email provider, is not "connecting to server", so, if & when I get an answer to this query, I probably won't be able to access your reply!
On the other hand, if it corrects itself in the meantime, [it has before] at least I'll hopefully have some answers on what to do, the next time it happens, as I expect it will.
It's just the reverse of the problem I had on my own laptop, then, I could do emails, but not get on the net, now I can access the net, [as witness this post] but not the email programme.
I get the banner that says, [in brief];- "The mailhost / host pophost 1 could not be found, please verify that you have entered the server name correctly, blah, blah, blah."
I have run my AV, no viruses found, nothing in the "vault", I've checked connections & the phone-line, also checked dial-up connection via desktop; "connected"& it shows the activity , bytes in & out.
I realise that the latter checks were superfluous, but I checked them anyway, in my desperation.
Any ideas?, as I said, I've had this before some time ago on my own laptop, & I believe it righted itself, or, someone told me that there was a procedure to correct it, all in all, it's a d****d nuisance.

Refer to my last post;-emailing problem.
Booted up a couple of hours later & Outlook Express was connected again, emails in/out OK., I said that it might "put itself right", as it has done this before, would you still give me any clues as to why this happens, & is there a procedure to correct this glitch in case I get it again, & it stays indefinitely.
    Thanks.

The error message you are getting is related to DNS not resolving for your mail server. This can be a problem of the DNS servers not working, a bad connection, or you having an outdated servername.

You may wish to check and be sure that you have the most current, accurate servername for your mail server.
  13. Maurice Banned Posts: 653

Thanks again,Goalie, yes, I did check my servername,it's been the same one that I have had from the start, twenty months ago.
When you say up to date, why should it change? I have had the same mail server, Outlook Express 6, all along, the same as my web server, Internet Explorer, plus I have stuck with the same ISP.

On a more general note, those of you who have been helping with my original long-running battle with my "repairer" [12 weeks to date] might like to know the latest development.
As I said, about a fortnight ago, he passed my laptop on to somebody else, who said he thought he could solve the problems, he works for a registered company who specialise in laptop repairs, & has replaced the faulty BIOS chip with an identical one from a machine with a smashed screen.
He is now working on re-installing Windows XP, which has been the problem, but now he thinks that he has found a way to do this, & reckons that there is a good chance that he can do this, he has asked me if I would give him two weeks, & if he cannot, he will declare it to be beyond repair, reporting this fact to my original techie, & there would be no charge to him [it's a policy in this country, no repair, no charge]
So, it seems to boil down to two things, I will either get my laptop back, [no charge] or he will not be charged, giving the strong possibility that I will get some compensation, due to the fact that he has not had to pay out the estimated repair cost of £200 - £300.
Of course I would expect more than this, as my laptop cost £790 20 months ago, 3 of which, it has been with him.
    Wish me luck guys!

Thanks, RBS, can't lose now, can I ??

Er, I THINK I've got it sussed, Bloomsday is a Dutch national day, am I correct?, [probably "Blaumentag" in German].....similar in Dutch?.....didn't do languages at school, wish I'd learnt German, many similar words in Dutch of course.
Happy drinking,...... 'til August 1st?, WOW!!, a tolerant partner, obviously, bless her heart.

Luck of the Irish? Yeh, lucky they didn't starve to death courtesy of you cold-hearted Englishmen;)

Bloomsday is in regards to the Bloom character of Joyce's Ulyssees, no?

Maurice, you ought to keep the computer you have now and tell the 'thechie' to enjoy your old one- at least it functions- warts, trojans and all.

Hey, hold on, little knowledge indeed!, can't an old fella take an educated [?] guess, without you lot arranging a lynch mob??
No, you're right, both of yez, both with Irish connections, bet realblackstuff's partner would be highly insulted, don't tell your fiery colleen, RBS, or she'll sic the hobgoblins on to me, so she will!
At the risk of more curses, did you know that Frankenstein's monster was Irish?.........Begorra* [big 'orror]
    *Origin, 19th century;- "by god"
Think I'll close now while I'm still safe, [& that Chancellor may be lurking]
    Maurice

P.S., Apparently it would be illegal to keep his laptop,Godataloss, it would be construed as "taking with intent to deprive the owner thereof" [ Iworked at a Solicitor's for a short while]

I didn't suggest you steal it Maurice. It might not hurt your cause to suggest that you would stubbornly hold on to it until things are resolved to YOUR satisfaction. You English are so polite (unless you are busy plundering the Emerald Isle or some poor isolated Argentinians)- you need to hold this guy's feet to the fire! Besides, by the time your done with that laptop, it will be so full of viri and trojans, the guy won't want it back!:haha:
