I`m sure there are others you can get rid of. Post a fresh HJT log, only after you`ve finished the defrag.

Ok done it, bascially to be fair, it seems a lot better and quicker than it did a few days ago. However it still isn't as quick on start up as it used to be but the pc is running much better thanks to you howard. I still feel as thought a utility check should be done but which driver I dont know.

If your hard drive was really badly fragmented, it may be worth your while running another defrag. This will help to compact files and speed up your system. I forgot to say earlier, but if you have anyscreen savers set to run, you should disable them before you run the disk defrag.

I still think you should check your hard drive for problems, just in case. The Powermax ISO programme will do this for you. You simply download the programme and burn it to a cd as an image. Your burning software will tell you how to burn an image file. Then boot your system from the cd and run the diagnostic tests.

    Regards Howard :)

I went to do a defrag and I get that message again that its chkdsk is scheduled to run on c. Is this common?

Also I really don't know how to burn images, is there another way?

I`m concerned that you`ve got the check disk message again. You need to run check disk again as I showed you earlier on.

I think it`s very important that you run a disk diagnostic programme. Do you have a floppy drive?

If so you can use the Powermax floppy programme, instead of the iso.

    Regards Howard :)

yer I have a floppy drive, how do I get the powermax thing on as in is there any specific steps?
  9. howard_hopkinso Newcomer, in training Posts: 25,949   +16

Just double click the Powermax.exe file and follow the instructions. Then, make sure your computers boot priority is set to floppy(A)/cd(D)/HDD(C). With the floppy disk in the drive, reboot your system.

how do i make my computer boot priority to floppy drive?. I hope your last piece of advice to me wont be, replace your hard drive :(
  11. howard_hopkinso Newcomer, in training Posts: 25,949   +16

I won`t tell you to replace your hard drive, unless it turns out to be faulty.

You set your boot priority in your bios.

    Regards Howard :)

I aint done the whole disk check thing yet but I started to make a powermax thing on the floppy, it gets to 14% and says diskette making error?????
  13. howard_hopkinso Newcomer, in training Posts: 25,949   +16

Maybe the floppy disk is faulty, try another one.

Btw when you were giving me stuff to fix on hjt, you didnt make me get rid of web messenger by any chance did u? cant seem to find it

I have made the powermax thing now. What exactly do I do with it though and how do I get onto bios etc?
  15. howard_hopkinso Newcomer, in training Posts: 25,949   +16

I didn`t make you get rid of anything. All I did was to help you to stop a load of stuff from running on startup. Which web messenger programme are you referring to exactly.

    Regards Howard :)
  16. bobby123 Newcomer, in training Posts: 391

its ok doesnt matter about that. Can you tell me what to do with the floppy disk as in how do I get bios to start it?
  17. howard_hopkinso Newcomer, in training Posts: 25,949   +16

First, just try booting your computer with the floppy disk in the drive and see what happens. If that doesn`t work, go into your bios and look for your boot settings. Set them as I outlined in my post #69, then save and exit bios.

    Regards Howard :)
  18. bobby123 Newcomer, in training Posts: 391

Will it just start with the floppy thing because I have set the pc to do the whole f disk scan thing as I cant defrag without it.
  19. howard_hopkinso Newcomer, in training Posts: 25,949   +16

If the boot priority is set correctly, the computer will automatically boot from the floppy drive first. You`ll need to have the floppy disk in the floppy drive of course. I`m not sure what you mean by the "f disk scan thing"?
