GTA Trilogy performance issues can largely be solved by enabling DirectX 12 and VSync

Bottom line: One YouTuber has discovered a two-part solution that greatly improves the in-game performance of each of the three games in Rockstar's new GTA Trilogy for PC. Not all of the workarounds are ideal, especially if you've spent money on a high refresh rate monitor, but they should at least make the games bearable until Rockstar gets around to rolling out a patch or two.

Rockstar Games would no doubt love to hit the reset button on Grand Theft Auto: The Trilogy – The Definitive Edition. The bundle of remasters officially launched on November 11 but heavy demand prompted the company to take down its Games Launcher for “maintenance” shortly after. It returned a day later, but gamers discovered that Rockstar had pulled the trilogy in order to remove “files unintentionally included in these versions.”

It’s nearly a week later and while the game is available to purchase on PC once again, there are still plenty of issues that need ironing out. Fortunately, some workarounds have already emerged courtesy of the gaming community.

First, you’ll want to lock your display’s refresh rate to 60Hz and activate VSync.

Joker Productions also recommends switching the games' default API from DirectX 11 to DirectX 12. You can do so in the Rockstar Launcher under settings -> launch arguments and entering “-dx12.” This will need to be done for each of the three games in the trilogy.

With any luck, Rockstar will patch some of the performance issues and wonky AI in the near future, but for now, these manual changes should at least allow early adopters to play the games without any major performance issues.

Grand Theft Auto: The Trilogy – The Definitive Edition retails for $59.99 across all major platforms, including the Nintendo Switch.

The texture misspellings and crazy, Cyperpunk 2077 level physics glitches however those are here to stay: Sadly a staple of the series but it does looks like this will be as bad of a port of otherwise a decent game(s) as GTA IV was during it's time in the sun.

I hoped people making this remaster would be passionate about these games as they were amazing in their time and are still very replayable.

What we got instead was a blatant cash grab. Half assed models, terrible performance, bugs added instead of being fixed and all that for just $60.

Ha, dealing with old, janky code certainly wouldn't help :p

You would think that if they did ANY testing, this fix would have come up pretty quickly .... shame on them for releasing a broken game and not already having the fix out there ......

I'm not a coder - but really a lot of remasters are crap . Surely a company can specialise in this .

I mean if the game is good enough and you have the source code - do a complete rewrite .
Most of the hard work is done - the story, the connections , the event triggers etc .

If they did this they could of sold the trilogy for $100 and people would be gushing

I've never played GTA - but I don't think there's any special sauce like an arcade game - ie machine specific codes for perfect timing etc - Even given that some companies in the 80s 90s did fantastic ports of Arcade classics - I would imagine some would be hard to do - as a lot of analysis would be needed - as timings were based on weird interplay of proprietary chips - or something like that . My casual looking at GTA - seems just assets properties, hit boxes , event triggers - and given all the glitch YT videos they stuffed this up bigtime .
Same story you coders know - Bean Counters save money today - to fix up tomorrow with more janky code added to already janky code . When 70% of that money would of done it right in the first place - with easy fixes if needed

Vsync, are you kidding me - input lag incoming...

Let me guess, Rockstar prioritized consoles, like they always do.

I never buy their games on PC as a result. I torrent them to not have to use Rockstar Launcher.

If their games were directly on Steam or Epic, I would buy them. I don't like to buy games on 1 launcher, just to launch a 2nd launcher to be able to play a game.
