Rockstar reveals discount launch prices for GTA V on PS5 and Xbox Series

Why it matters: Rockstar recently shared details of how it is upgrading GTA V and GTA Online for the PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series consoles, but didn’t mention the price. This week it revealed the games will be more expensive than most other cross-generation upgrades, even with a launch discount.

Pre-orders for the PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series versions of GTA V and GTA Online, which launch March 15, are now open. While not free like many other cross-generation upgrades, there is a steep discount that lasts until June. The PS5 upgrade is cheaper, owing to Sony’s deal with Rockstar.

While we already knew GTA Online by itself would be free on PS5 until June, this week Rockstar revealed GTA V for PS5 will be $10 until then. Afterwards, GTA Online will be $20, and GTA V -- which includes both story mode and GTA Online -- will be $40. During the discount period, the Xbox Series version of GTA Online will be $10 while GTA V will be $20.

This contrasts sharply from Capcom’s recent announcement that it will upgrade Resident Evil VII along with the remakes of Resident Evil 2 and Resident Evil 3 for PS5, Xbox Series, and PC for free. Upgrading from the last-generation to current-generation versions of recent games like Elden Ring and Cyberpunk 2077 is also free. Sony has committed to a $10 upgrade fee for its in-house games like Gran Turismo 7 and Horizon Forbidden West.

Last Week, Rockstar revealed these new versions of the games will introduce higher resolutions, higher framerates, ray tracing, HDR, and other technical improvements. Players can already start transferring their game progress.

I don’t really why consumers buy things like this. When I’m done with this type of game I’m done. There’s no going back, I haven’t played GTAV since like 2013. The Pc version came out, I got it free on epic at some point for the PC. But even if they offered this update for free I doubt I’d bother playing it again just for that.

Can’t Rockstar make a new game? I loved RDR2, they should do more of that.

This game and Skyrim have to be on every platform possible. They will be coming out for PlayStation 13 in about 50 years.

This is ok, if they plan on expanding the world iteratively with DLCs. The "original" GTAV was great, it made the series fun again after dull GTA4. But San Andreas still beats it due to the 3 city format and amount of random things between the cities. To me, it was the perfect open world style game, big, full of things and most of it was just stupid fun. The cities was also basically perfectly sized, is big enough for you to belief they are cities, but aren't overly big that tons of dev resource was poured in it to the detriment of other things.

Clearly is not part of the plan, but if they gradually expand the map to include San Fran and Vegas maybe over the next 3 or 4 years to basically "re-make" San Andreas, they can justifiably price the individual city DLCs at near full price game due to the higher amount of content, while expanding GTA Online maps while seamlessly transitioning current GTA Online players to the "sequel".

I would give these new versions a look if I know they are planning a proper map expansion later on. It has been many years I touched the game, and had some fond memories of it, but I am not simply going to get a face-lift of a game for that price.
