Solved SVCHOST.exe trojan causes physical memory dump and then wants to reinstall OS

Hello all,

So, I've run into a bit of a brick wall.
Several days ago, I was multitasking a few programs and deleting files and whatnot, having a good time. I was prompted with what I thought was just another "Java update" I needed to give permission to run. Normally I just click cancel, but I decided to just update and it would leave me alone. At the last second, I realized it wasn't java. Almost right after I clicked okay, my computer shut off, and then went to a BSOD, and turned back on. It was so slow that my internet window wasn't following my mouse when I'd drag it across the screen.
Now, I did a full scan with malware-bytes, found the virus (svchost.exe), and deleted it and then rebooted... It seemed to do the trick. Until the next morning when I tried to play my new game: Skyrim. It lagged like you'd not believe. I ran the scan again in safe mode, this time finding svchost.exe as well as 10 other viruses with the same name. Again, like last time, deleted them and then rebooted. It was running like a charm. Tonight, when I turned it on after moving it back from my girlfriend's house, it went to a BSOD stating it was running a physical memory dump. After this completed, it now wants to reinstall the OS!?

Does this mean that the computer I'm using is now going to lose all of its data and be overcome by the virus after OS reinstall? I looked all over the net with no help whatsoever.

I have a Dell Windows 7, 64-bit desktop. I've not had any issues with this computer previously, and this is the first time I've dealt with an issue this big. I'm freaking out.

I'd like to know specifically if I can save my data, if I'm going to need to reinstall the OS completely, and whether or not this is an issue that will need to be fixed physically. (Such as the hardware inside the system.)
Thanks in advance,
-Aaron

Please, observe following rules:
  • Read all of my instructions very carefully. Your mistakes during cleaning process may have very serious consequences, like unbootable computer.
  • If you're stuck, or you're not sure about certain step, always ask before doing anything else.
  • Please refrain from running tools or applying updates other than those I suggest.
  • Never run more than one scan at a time.
  • Keep updating me regarding your computer behavior, good, or bad.
  • The cleaning process, once started, has to be completed. Even if your computer appears to act better, it may still be infected. Once the computer is totally clean, I'll certainly let you know.
  • If you leave the topic without explanation in the middle of a cleaning process, you may not be eligible to receive any more help in malware removal forum.
  • I close my topics if you have not replied in 5 days. If you need more time, simply let me know. If I closed your topic and you need it to be reopened, simply PM me.

=============================================================

Let's see, if we can look at your computer booting from an external source.

Please download OTLPE (filesize 120,9 MB)

  • When downloaded double click on OTLPENet.exe and make sure there is a blank CD in your CD drive. This will automatically create a bootable CD.
  • Reboot your system using the boot CD you just created.
    • Note : If you do not know how to set your computer to boot from CD follow the steps HERE
  • Your system should now display a REATOGO-X-PE desktop.
  • Depending on your type of internet connection, you should be able to get online as well so you can access this topic more easily.
  • Double-click on the OTLPE icon.
  • When asked Do you wish to load the remote registry, select Yes
  • When asked Do you wish to load remote user profile(s) for scanning, select Yes
  • Ensure the box Automatically Load All Remaining Users" is checked and press OK
  • OTL should now start.
  • Press Run Scan to start the scan.
  • When finished, the file will be saved in drive C:\OTL.txt
  • Copy this file to your USB drive if you do not have internet connection on this system
  • Please post the contents of the OTL.txt file in your reply.

Okay, thank you. I'm downloading the file as we speak; I'll have the information from the text file as some point this evening.

I've messed with it a bit since the incident and I can use the computer now; but only in Safe Mode. Booting normally results a BSOD and restart.

A.

Alright, so I've managed to get the disk in and working properly, but it failed to run the scan you said to use in your first set of instructions.

However, I have used, and am currently using malwarebytes to find viruses.
Everytime I scan, I come up with the same, stinking one; svchost.exe.

I was trying to make a backup, but it was apparently copied over to the hard drive... Now what? Please tell me how I can rid of this stupid thing; I'm going to format anyhow, I just need a backup that is virus free!

I'll try running some of the other scans, though. What do you want me to run scans on? The hard drive I'm using as a back up, or the main drive C, or both?

==== End Of File ===========================

I can see you ran everything in normal mode.
Good news :)
What are the current issues?

Download aswMBR to your desktop.
Double click the aswMBR.exe to run it.
If you see this question: Would you like to download latest Avast! virus definitions?" say "Yes".
Click the "Scan" button to start scan:

On completion of the scan click "Save log", save it to your desktop and post in your next reply:

NOTE. aswMBR will create MBR.dat file on your desktop. This is a copy of your MBR. Do NOT delete it.

=============================================================

Please download ComboFix from Here or Here to your Desktop.

**Note: In the event you already have Combofix, this is a new version that I need you to download. It is important that it is saved directly to your desktop**
  1. Please, never rename Combofix unless instructed.
  2. Close any open browsers.
  3. Close/disable all anti virus and anti malware programs so they do not interfere with the running of ComboFix.
    • Very Important! Temporarily disable your anti-virus, script blocking and any anti-malware real-time protection before performing a scan. They can interfere with ComboFix or remove some of its embedded files which may cause "unpredictable results".
    • Click on this link to see a list of programs that should be disabled. The list is not all inclusive. If yours is not listed and you don't know how to disable it, please ask.
    NOTE1. If Combofix asks you to install Recovery Console, please allow it.
    NOTE 2. If Combofix asks you to update the program, always do so.
    • Close any open browsers.
    • WARNING: Combofix will disconnect your machine from the Internet as soon as it starts
    • Please do not attempt to re-connect your machine back to the Internet until Combofix has completely finished.
    • If there is no internet connection after running Combofix, then restart your computer to restore back your connection.
  4. Double click on combofix.exe & follow the prompts.
  5. When finished, it will produce a report for you.
  6. Please post the "C:\ComboFix.txt"
**Note 1: Do not mouseclick combofix's window while it's running. That may cause it to stall
**Note 2 for AVG users: ComboFix will not run until AVG is uninstalled as a protective measure against the anti-virus. This is because AVG "falsely" detects ComboFix (or its embedded files) as a threat and may remove them resulting in the tool not working correctly which in turn can cause "unpredictable results". Since AVG cannot be effectively disabled before running ComboFix, the author recommends you to uninstall AVG first.
Use AppRemover to uninstall it: https://www.techspot.com/downloads/5514-appremover.html
We can reinstall it when we're done with CF.
**Note 3: If you receive an error "Illegal operation attempted on a registery key that has been marked for deletion", restart computer to fix the issue.

Make sure, you re-enable your security programs, when you're done with Combofix.

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
NOTE.
If, for some reason, Combofix refuses to run, try one of the following:
1. Run Combofix from Safe Mode (How to...)
2. Delete Combofix file, download fresh one, but rename combofix.exe to yourname.exe BEFORE saving it to your desktop.
Do NOT run it yet.
Please download and run the below tool named Rkill (courtesy of BleepingComputer.com) which may help allow other programs to run.
There are 4 different versions. If one of them won't run then download and try to run the other one.
Vista and Win7 users need to right click Rkill and choose Run as Administrator
You only need to get one of these to run, not all of them. You may get warnings from your antivirus about this tool, ignore them or shutdown your antivirus.
Rkill.com
Rkill.scr
Rkill.exe
  • Double-click on the Rkill desktop icon to run the tool.
  • If using Vista or Windows 7 right-click on it and choose Run As Administrator.
  • A black DOS box will briefly flash and then disappear. This is normal and indicates the tool ran successfully.
  • If not, delete the file, then download and use the one provided in Link 2.
  • If it does not work, repeat the process and attempt to use one of the remaining links until the tool runs.
  • Do not reboot until instructed.
  • If the tool does not run from any of the links provided, please let me know.
Once you've gotten one of them to run, immediately run your_name.exe by double clicking on it.
If normal mode still doesn't work, run BOTH tools from safe mode.
In case #2, please post BOTH logs, rKill and Combofix.
DO NOT make any other changes to your computer (like installing programs, using other cleaning tools, etc.), until it's officially declared clean!!!
I've run across a major disappointment..
I was fine until I tried running ComboFix, but it was giving me errors. So I tried booting in safe mode; however, another issue occurred. It now will not run windows in normal mode, or safe mode. It simply starts up like normal, goes to the Windows home screen right before user log in, and stops mid-loading and goes to "windows repair". It finds several issues, and then tries to fix them. Unfortunately, the issues are not repaired and are failed because of an 0x0 error. After I tried doing this again, it then wanted me to reinstall windows 7 again like before.
I wanted to make sure that I could still operate the computer, so I tried booting from the boot up disk I made earlier in the forum. (Which by the way wouldn't let me do any scans because it said my thing wasn't windows 2000 or later or something.)
This bootup disk did work, so I imagine its the trojan that is causing all these errors?
While booted from the bootdisk can you operate computer normally.
Did you run aswMBR before Combofix?
As far as I know everything is working normally off of the boot disk.. I can't run the scanner though as stated in the previous reply.
And I did run the previous program's scan before using combofix.. Thinking back to it, however, I might have hit "fix" before hitting the close button...would that have made a difference in the way my computer has been behaving?
I apologize for not getting to reply to this thread sooner...
I am using a clean computer and flash drive to download aswMBR to install and scan the infected one running on the boot disk. (It won't allow me to access my internet. I'm using a wireless connection.)
I am unable to use my Windows OS; I am running into the same problem as before...Looping "Windows fix" with fails and errors each time.
I'll post a new reply once I try out aswMBR on the infected computer; cross your fingers.
Alright...
Here is the log it gave me after I saved it to the desktop:
Download TDSSKiller and save it to your desktop.
  • Doubleclick on TDSSKiller.exe to run the application, then on Start Scan.
  • If an infected file is detected, the default action will be Cure, click on Continue.
  • If a suspicious file is detected, the default action will be Skip, click on Continue.
  • It may ask you to reboot the computer to complete the process. Click on Reboot Now.
  • If no reboot is require, click on Report. A log file should appear. Please copy and paste the contents of that file here.
  • If a reboot is required, the report can also be found in your root directory (usually C:\ folder) in the form of TDSSKiller_xxxx_log.txt. Please copy and paste the contents of that file here.
Alright.
I've run the program, and it scanned the system. Unfortunately, I again needed to do it from the boot disk. Though it found a rootkit, and successfully "cured" it.
However, after it finished, it stated a restart was required. When I clicked restart, nothing happend, and I couldn't find a log. Am I just missing it? And whats next?
OK, now we know little bit more about your issue.
Restart computer
When you reboot you will see an option to boot into the Recovery Console or the normal Windows installation.
You have to use the up/down arrows to choose the Recovery Console. Then press Enter but you only have 2 seconds by default.
If you find this hard to do then you can go into Control Panel, System, Advanced, Startup and Recovery, Settings. Where it says Time to Display List of Operating Systems, change it to 10 or more seconds. OK Then reboot.
You should get a black screen with a C:\> prompt. Type with an Enter after each line:
fixmbr
fixboot
exit
Attempt to boot normally.
I restarted the computer, however, I didn't get an option for "Recovery Console". On the main "start up" of windows, I could press f2 for setup options, or f12 to select a bootup device. I thought it might be in there, but I didn't see it. I just tried booting up normally, anyhow, and it worked. Should we move on, or should I go back and use command prompt?
