my other computer doesn't have the option to boot from usb.

I've found the Repair disc i created when i first bought this laptop. Should I try booting up with it??

Yes you can try to boot bad computer from it and see if it'll boot.
Don't use it though as it'll erase all data.

Black screen shows Windows is loading files....

Then it finishes and I get the System Recovery Options box with select a keyboard input method drop down box and next/cancel option

I'm not sure what to think at this moment.
Possibly we're dealing with something more than just infection.

We can't boot the computer from any external source.

    Run hard drive diagnostics: http://www.tacktech.com/display.cfm?ttid=287
Make sure, you select tool, which is appropriate for the brand of your hard drive.
Depending on the program, it'll create bootable floppy, or bootable CD.
If downloaded file is of .iso type, use ImgBurn: http://www.imgburn.com/ to burn .iso file to a CD (select "Write image file to disc" option), and make the CD bootable.

NOTE. If your hard drive is made by Toshiba, unfortunately, you're out of luck, because Toshiba doesn't provide any diagnostic tool.

I loaded the "DRIVERS AND UTILITIES" disc that came with the laptop and it has diagnostic tool for testing memory or system.

Should i test the system, couldn't hurt i guess??

I'm not sure what kind of system check it does.
Since it's just a check give it a shot.

We're trying to establish if anything will run from CD drive.

The diagnostic utility was running for awhile scanning harddrive and i just got this error message:

    Error Code 0F00:065D
Msg: DISK - DST Self-test Read error

The given error code and message can be used by Technical Support to help diagnose the problem.
Do you want to continue testing?

    Yes/ No/ Retry

    This doesn't sound good.

Go ahead with my reply #44 (creating hard drive diagnostic disk).

I don't know which file to download since I don't know which harddrive is in my laptop and I'm not comfortable with opening it up since it's still under warrant.

As I mentioned earlier I don't have much on this laptop that I don't mind losing. Would it hurt at this time to try the built in "Startup Repair" ???

Thanks again for all your hard work

If you want to reinstall Windows that would be the easiest solution.

Your laptop should have recovery partition, which should take care of it.

    What computer brand is it?
  11. cricket04 Newcomer, in training Posts: 33

It's a Dell Inspiron N5010 with windows 7 Home prem.

If I do a startup repair is there a chance the virus wil still be present??

    Thanks

Just searching through the BIOS and noticed that the SATA Mode has AHCI selected. Shouldn't it be ATA???
  12. Broni Malware Annihilator Posts: 39,349   +175

As far as I remember "startup repair" didn't work did it?
  13. cricket04 Newcomer, in training Posts: 33

We didn't try "Startup Repair" instead you had me use command prompt with the 2 run commands.

Do I try Startup Repair now?

Sorry for asking so many questions, don't want to do a step that will cause more problems.

    Thanks

    Not a problem :)
Go ahead and try "startup repair".

Should BIOS SATA MODE be AHCI like it was or ATA??

    Thanks

    I'm not sure.
You'd have to check with hardware forum people.

In a last attempt to get this laptop running I've restored it back to factory image but it still wont boot up windows.

I found info that said OTLPE disc won't run with SATA mode AHCI so I changed it to ATA and now the disc runs and opens to the REATOGO-X-PE desktop.

When I double click on the OTLPE icon a "Browse For Folder" box opens up.

    What next??
    Thanks

Something else must be involved then.
    Possibly some hardware problem.
I suggest you start new topic in Windows or hardware forum.

    Good luck!
