Task manager/msconfig/regedit problem...

Status
Not open for further replies.
Task Manager refuses to open, and when I try to open regedit or msconfig, I get the message "Another program is currently using this program".

Here's what I've done:

- Booted into Safe Mode
- Ran full, updated system scan with NIS 2004 Pro
- Ran updated Ad-Aware scan
- Ran A-squared scan
- Checked WinTasks Pro for recognized processes

Hello and welcome to Techspot.

Go HERE and follow the instructions carefully. Print them out if you can.

Once you have done that go HERE for instructions on how to post your Hijackthis log.

Regards Howard

After analyzed your HT log file, i found this in C:\windows\winlogon.exe...This entry is not running from the System32 folder, so it is probably nasty.Possibly nasty! According to my experience, this process runs normally in c:\windows\system32\! Check if you know this process and arrange a viruscheck where required.

~C:\Program Files\Visual Networks\Visual IP InSight\SBC\IPClient.exe
This is a nasty process! You should fix it and try to delete it manually!

~C:\Program Files\Y'z Shadow\YzShadow.exe
This is a unknown process.

~C:\Program Files\TechSmith\SnagIt 7\TSCHelp.exe
This is a unknown process.

~R1 - HKCU\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Internet Settings,ProxyOverride = 127.0.0.1
If you do not know the entry '127.0.0.1', delete it.

~O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [StarSkin] C:\PROGRAM FILES\ROCKET DIVISION SOFTWARE\STARSKIN\STARSKIN.EXE -H
This is a unknown process.

~O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [IPInSightLAN 02] "C:\Program Files\Visual Networks\Visual IP InSight\SBC\IPClient.exe" -l
This one is must and should be fixed

Thanks for the quick replies :)

Y'z Shadow is a utility that adds drop shadows to Windows
SnagIt is a screen-capture utility
Starskin is a theme manager

The browser override is unknown. I'll fix that one.

I'm a little hesistant to do anything about IPClient, though. One of the directories is named SBC, which is my DSL provider.

On a side note, I found a cool analysis site. Take a look:
http://research.pestpatrol.com/Analyses/2004-10-08_184823.asp

Try go to run and type cmd...in dos mode type ipconfig /all to view the Windows IP configuration and PPP adapter...so u can know your IP Adsress.

Yeah...that site is pretty cool...:)

127.0.0.1 sounds like an internal IP for computers behind a router. I'm connected directly to my DSL modem, so this cannot be the case. I've fixed that entry.

I see...so how it's going? Did u get rid all of the nasty stuff yet? Why don't u post it in here again to insure either the system is clean or not...( with all the hidden files shown and all browser were closed )

Problem solved! I fixed the browser override entry and blocked out a couple of autostarts with WinTasks, ran Windows Update, rebooted, and BAM! No more baddies! :)

Thanks to everyone for their help!

If you are happy with the minimalistic, not well-founded ricvai7 solution, I'll leave you with the other viruses, spyware etc.

RBS 'If you are happy with the minimalistic, not well-founded ricvai7 solution'

I feel half-baked a more apt description.

Brings to mind the adage "a little knowledge is a dangerous thing"
