Wow

What a great deal. Ive been planning on upgrading my computer for a while now and this will help me out a lot, not just in money, but in being able to figure out what to get. Ive been spending the past few months surfing the net, forums and drilling friends so that when the time comes i will have the best computer for the best price. I have spent countless hours revising plans and comming up with new plans. Every day it seems my plans for the computer change, today I went from considering 6800gs sli to a x1600 crossfire, right now im thinking this 7800gt will save me countless hours of sleep and prolong my life expectency...17 is not too young to worry about old age.

Does anyone know how well PCI-E runs on AGP8x?
Because if it dosent run too well I reckon I'll trade in my prize for 1.5gb more ram and a Radeon 9800xt

To the best of my knowledge, PCI-E cards run in PCI-E slots, no matter how fast the AGP slot is.

Yes

You are correct, A PCI E card is deffinitly not compatable with an agp slot, right now most motherboards have PCI E x8 support, the PCI E graphics cards have the capability to go x16, only thing is there is little or now improvment yet from 8 to 16x. In my opinion you should use that money to get an x850xt and have and make sure u have at least a gig of ram. This is if you are into gamming, you might have to shell out an extra 20 bucks, but it would be worth it, the performance jump is too big to pass up. :)

Im on the same boat as Finchy, I have never had a console and probably never will. I was raised on computers, my first video games played were on the computer. Consoles are pretty cool though, pop a game in and enjoy, but in these days it is important to have a computer, owning a computer should come before owning a console. Then for that extra 300-400 bucks instead of getting a console, spend it on your computer to turn it into a gaming computer. A computer that can play games is better than a console system that can imitate a computer. As for the power of consoles, I would have to agree with people who say that the games supported by the console are most important. In my experience, most of the time when comparing two systems that are that close in performance the only way to tell which is better is to torture it and see which cracks first...not very nice.
If your trying to pick between a playstation and xbox, another big thing to consider is what your friends have. By getting a system that is compatible with your friend's, you are now in a position to have fun lan partys, or the ability to swap games.
These crazy consoles are becoming more and more like computers everyday. I would even go as far to say that the gap between consoles and computers has been closed. The Phantom by infinium is the bridge between the two. The only thing is, where are they? The phantom is not out on the market yet and it might not make it. Who knows....
The closer and closer consoles get to PC's the closer the companies are getting to their doom. Once people realize their computers will do the same thing consoles do, but better...bye bye Playstation.

Meaning with multiple cores, well yeah i think it has like 9 cores right?
I was reading about the Cell processor in a PC mag a while back and they sound complex!! I think they have 2 'master cores', then 7 'cell cores' that are controlled by the masters and all the cells interconnect, but the masters are seperate or something like that, ani kept reading and it made my brain melt.

On this point i most definently agree. $300 bucks for a new console, and it will work well within its limits until it is obsolete, but games tend to be more expensive for consoles than pc, and for much longer. Plus consoles...lol...just are not good workstations, they are only good for gaming, that is it. Now you put hat $300 into a computer, well even with modern prices that is a pretty good upgrade.

This is getting pretty off topic here, so I've created a thread and poll in The Meeting 'spot' on the subject of consoles, so that this thread can go back to being about the techspot new year giveaway.

it is too a gadget. something that bond would use when he had some off time.

anwyays im going to bed. good luck to u all

ps. we shouldnt talk about consoles here. actually i dont even no what we should talk about here. perhaps how to end world hunger. we could get alot of people to help seeing as every body in the entire world wants a 7800. night everybody

Talk about the competition here. talk about other things in the appropriate forums in any new thread you would like to start. Makes sense to me anyway.

Hmmm.. gadget in the dictionary... yeah this forum is nerdy enough for that.

what you guys are arguing over is whether the 7800GT is a "small fitting or contrivance in machinery" (fitting as 'bathroom fittings', not as in 'why isn't my foot fitting in my mouth')

so there you go.. that settles it :approve:
