Twitter lets you play classic MS-DOS games within tweets

The Internet Archive is a treasure trove for fans of classic MS-DOS games. Earlier this year, the non-profit digital library added nearly 2,400 titles to its catalog but the one drawback (if you can even call it that) is that you had to play the games on their dedicated webpages.

That’s no longer the case (and perhaps hasn’t been for a while now). Wired recently discovered that if you paste the URL for a game’s site into a tweet then view the tweet on the web, you can play the game right then and there within the tweet.

As the publication put it, it’s a game embedded into a tweet embedded into a story. It’s like Inception for games, or something like that.

If you recall, the original batch of 2,400 titles included fan favorites like Street Fighter II, Out Run, Dig Dug, Metal Gear and The Oregon Trail. If you haven’t played these older titles in a while (or ever), it’ll certainly take some time to adjust.

The embedded magic appears to be possible thanks to Twitter’s Cards. This platform is often used to bring music to Twitter as was the case when Twitter partnered with SoundCloud last October. More recently, Rhapsody became the first streaming service to offer its full catalog of music on the microblogging platform.
