If you wish to use this PC for gaming your first check would be to look up what the system requirements are for the games you wish to run.

You will mosty likely find that both your memory a graphics need to be upgraded. Fitting a good quality graphics card may also require a larger power supply.

Even though your video card actually supports most of the games on the market, the RAM does not. And it's very interesting that you're running DirectX 10 on a Windows XP OS - that is usually not supported and actually might be your problem. The solution for that would be to download and install DirectX 9, but you probably want to wait with that until later (it also might not be your problem.

What Mark56 said - check the game's requirements and compare these to your computer's. You may probably be able to upgrade many of the components (which may require an upgrade) without voiding your warranty - although do not take just my word for it, please.

Okay i wanted to play sims 2 on this computer for the longest time. so what you are saying is i need more RAM. so should i simply delete useless things on my computer? and how do i get rid of Directx10 to downgrade it to Directx9?

In case you want to try and replace DirectX 10 for XP with DirectX 9, you must first uninstall DX10 and then re-install DX9. DX9 can be downloaded online at many locations, DX10 can be uninstalled from the Add/Remove program-option in your Control Panel. (please note that my rambling could also not fix your problem... Direct X 10 is better than DX9 in quiality and such, so it would be a shame if this doesn't work).

Cleaning up things on your computer will not give you more RAM (sorry if I mis-understood your post, BTW). It might "free up" more RAM, but you need to add more (or bigger) RAM-sticks onto the motherboard. Although: SIMS 2 will work on a PC with 512MbB of RAM, so if SIMS2 is not working - then there is in fact another issue underlying everything.

The latest version of DirectX10 is compatible with Windows XP. As long as you have the most recent version you can stop worrying about that.

The problem also remains that you have not got the correct drivers installed for your graphics card, can you explain what the problem is with that, do you have the correct driver? What happens when you try to install it?

The problem was that my graphics card wont even show up for some reason it says its a VgaSave card? And when i go to check what graphics card i really have it says n/a for all categories in the display tab of the properties of my computer. I probably dont have any correct drivers since this computer has been refragged due to viruses. But when i try to run the game it says "Failed to find any Directx9.0c compatible graphics adapters!" thats where im stuck

Ah, Ok. It simply sounds like you need drivers, then.

When you press "start", and press "shut down", is one or more of the three icons (i.e. hibernation, shut off, restart) faded (unpressable?). If so, then it sounds even more like a driver-related problem. Especially as you said that the computer has been "refragged" recently.

So:
What graphics card are you using?
Model number?
Do you have the drivers?
(Do you need help searching for the drivers?)

This page will give you the graphics driver for your PC. Just click on the + next to Graphics and the driver details will appear, click on the driver name and then click on the Download button. Save to your desktop and then double click on it to install.

Yes the one that says stand by is unclickable. And i have no clue on the card details because when i go to search what card i have or the model number it say n/a on all categories. So its like my graphics card is not even there? And yes i would need help with the drivers but it looks like Mark56 posted some

This pretty much confirms the hypothesis: you're simply lacking drivers!

@Mark56, you sure you got the drivers right?

If they are not applicable on the system, that would indicate that those are either the wrong drivers or that something is prohibiting them from installing.

Absolutely certain, that link I gave is for the model of PC named in the DXdiag log, HP Pavilion A700N. This can only be incorrect if the graphics card has been changed or HP have got it wrong.

If the driver is refusing to install then I suspect the card is faulty. This could explain why the system has been running with VGAsave.

(is your monitor-port, aka. VGA-port, aligned vertically or horizontally?)

You wont believe it when I say this, but I'm actually looking at your computer model right now (It's my neighbor's), he says that there where two models offered at the store - one with and one without an external GPU. If your model has an external GPU, then those drivers provided could have been reproached by the machine.

Alternative A: Your model has an internal GPU - VGA aligned vertically.
We'll try to scope up some drivers for it.

Alternative B: Your model has an external GPU - VGA aligned horizontally.
We'll try and figure out your exact model and scope up some drivers for it.

By the way, the default option for your computer is an internal GPU, so HP would have the drivers for it. But if its external, then we'll guide you into heading for nVidia or ATi's website and download the appropriate drivers.

Look at the back of the PC, where all the cables plug in.

There will be a vertical row of connections, if your monitor is connected to a plug in this row you do not have a seperate graphics card, it is integrated into your motherboard.

On the lower part of the case there will be several horizontal slots, if your monitor is connected to a plug in one of those slots you do have a seperate graphics card.

Download and install this software and then run it. From the list on the left scroll down to the hardware section and find the graphics device, click on it and post back the details that appear.
