I have about 250gb+ of stuff I can back to my external, but wouldn't I be moving the virus as well?

And I have some programs where I don't have the disc for anymore, will I be essentially reformatting my computer?

    Yes.
All those files would have to be scanned after fresh installation.

All right...guess I'll get started on backing everything up

Anything else I should do in the meantime?

    I can't think of anything.
Too bad we couldn't fix it :(

Well I was going to reformat eventually anyways, and at least I still have a chance to back everything up.

I'm thankful that you spent all this time helping me, even if the outcome wasn't optimal.

I'll inform you once everything has been backed up

    Sounds like a plan :)
    Good luck!

I tried freeing up space on my harddrive from the infected computer, and I emptied the recycling bin even though it's corrupt. I now noticed that it didn't free up any space...did I just screw up?

I'm not sure what you're trying to do.
You're supposed to be reinstalling Windows.

    I'm still backing up

I tried freeing up space from my external from my infected computer with the corrupted Recycling Bin*

You're trying to free some space on your EXTERNAL drive?
  11. lunsk Newcomer, in training Posts: 62

Yes i was freeing space on my external

Well you can only fit as much as it'll take :)

But I tried deleting some files and emptying the recycle bin and it didn't free up any space

What do you want me to do?
    I can't make your drive bigger :)
  15. lunsk Newcomer, in training Posts: 62

Oh no, I was just curious if some files were corrupted and just taking up space on my harddrive since I emptied from a corrupted recycling bin

Allright, I finished backing everything up, what should I do to reinstall?
  17. Broni Malware Annihilator Posts: 39,324   +175

    You have reinstallation DVD.
Put it in, restart computer, make sure it boots to that DVD and follow on-screen instructions.

I'm trying to install, but it says I don't have enough room. Do I need to format the drives? Both my main drive and recovery?
  19. lunsk Newcomer, in training Posts: 62

I finished reinstalling, but I formatted my recovery drive by accident.

What should I do before getting all my files back, download MSE and scan my external?

Since you have reinstallation DVD you'll be fine.

    Exactly.
