Windows 7 Questions

Thanks SNGX1275 for the info. Now just have to wait for about 3 to 4 weeks to download the RC.

Is a Release Candidate different from a beta release?

Yes different. The Release Candidate is the nearest one to the Final Version, so if you download the RC then you won't find too much changes in the final one.

So what, now I gotta DL a whole other copy or can I just update from the 64bit beta? It runs so good on my machine I don't want to screw it up now.

I already have XP and 7 installed on this computer... triple booting with another version of 7 seems kinda dumb to me. Is that what you are telling me to do?

Yes.

So obviously I didn't understand your question:

"So what, now I gotta DL a whole other copy or can I just update from the 64bit beta?
"

Are you asking to go from 32Bit to 64Bit? That would require a whole new Partition
Maybe you could clear up what you need support on?

I already have the Windows 7 (64-bit) beta dual booted with XP. My question is when RC1 is released, will I have to download that and wipe out the existing beta to have the newer version of the OS, or will it automatically update itself? That would be a pain to install the whole thing all over; like I said, it works great so I don't want to mess it up.

Oh :)

Sorry they won't update (Beta or RC)

The only one that will update will be the real version (and only when an update happens to that like Windows 7 SP1 :D)

Well I guess I'll pass on downloading it then because I don't really use 7 all that much right now anyways. I really only use it just to screw around and try to get things to run but I don't really have any programs that I can't just install on XP. I guess that kinda defeats the purpose of having a beta installed but whatever, makes me look forward to the real version. I will think about it actually, because all of you are claiming it's going to be so great; who knows when they release the final version...

Recently updated my free version of AVG from 8.0 to 8.5 on Windows 7 x64 and all hell broke loose! During the uninstall of 8.0 I got my first blue screen - upon reboot it would BSOD after a couple minutes of logging into the machine. I completed the 8.5 install anyway and it still continued to crash with a tdx.sys fault.

I ended up uninstalling 8.5 from my machine and then re-installing the NIC drivers and so far all is well again. Just posting this in case someone else is experiencing it.

LNCPapa that has nothing to do with Windows 7
(I didn't think it was wise to remove your post, so therefore felt the need to reply)

AVG8 has some bad issues when it attaches its drivers to your network
Plus it doesn't find all Viruses, actually I'll quote a few hours ago post that you should read ! https://www.techspot.com/vb/showthread.php?p=737430#post737430
How often do I find this specific single only related to AVG8 issue? -> Everytime

So my recommendation is Don't use AVG8 with Windows7 (actually any Windows version)

I downloaded AVG 8.5 with Win7. It seems to work fine. I did use the custom install option and declined the link checker and e-mail scanners. I must point out though that I'm not on a network.

Anyone know where I can go to change the recycle bin icon?

Recycle Bin Registry key, in Windows7

[HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\CLSID\{645FF040-5081-101B-9F08-00AA002F954E}\Shell\]

I don't think anyone has created a reg tweak for it yet (that you can just run)

Regarding AVG8 my point was not that it won't work, obviously it works.
My point is that it is not very good and under infection the Network is usually the first to be corrupted. But the real issue is that it misses Malware, All up very poor quality Antivirus.

As this is the "Windows 7 Questions" thread, if you want more details on AVG8 (and my thoughts) read this thread: https://www.techspot.com/vb/topic124174.html (AVG free v. the rest)

AVG is absolute shovelware compared to some of the other free ones. I installed Avira AntiVir Free Edition on my 64-bit install of 7 while back and it still works perfectly. Makes it extremely hard to not recommend. I actually stopped using AVG altogether when I realized how horrible the detection was and how slow it made my computer. A big thumbs down to Grisoft for releasing that garbage.

I remove AVG from many "infected" PC's and install Avast free antivirus on most systems now. Avast runs well in Windows 7... Avira AntiVir is used at my wife's office. It seem to be fine, although they still use XP

I really need to retract my AVG comments. I forgot about how it no longer seems to be able to scan just one file from the right click scan with AVG menu. I installed it on the latest build but remembered why I'd dumped it earlier when they switched from v. 7.5. I never had viris issues with 7.5 or earlier, although I never have virus issues to begin with. I'm using PCTools AV currently on XP and 7 build 7057. Uses about 5500k of memory and only 2 active processes. Everybody seems to want to provide a security "suite" that covers everything somewhat mediocre compared to the one thing they used to do well. But thats off topic and probably needs it's own thread for me to rant about, so I'll shut up now.

Has anyone been able to install Photoshop CS3 or CS4 on their 7 installation? I went to install CS4 and the system requirements for XP or Vista popped up, so I didn't do it. If I could get that and maybe 3ds Max installed under 7 I might use it more often...

Hey yes I have been able to install Adobe Photoshop CS3 on the Windows 7 RC and it works very well. You may go and install it

^Thanks for the response on that... will have to give it a try. I'm still running the Beta but hopefully it runs alright regardless.

7077 is rumored to be the final build before the RC, which is supposed to be build 7100. So you don't have the RC, and likely didn't even have 7077 when you posted. I'm not trying to be an *** about it, but in a thread dealing with a beta OS and esp when talking about program compatibilities I believe its pretty important to correctly note the build you are running.
