Windows 7 Questions

Speaking about 7077, (ya i know I'm breaking the rules but this is general) I was trying to install the 64 bit versions, dual booting the 64 bit win7 with my 32 bit XP, but I can't get the DVD to auto start in the Windows XP 32 bit window. So I have to install it by a reboot and DVD as first drive. What ends up is i have the XP on the C partition, but when I try to start the 64 bit, it wants to be the C drive too, unlike the 32 bit Win7 which when loaded through a window on XP is quite happy being on the G partition. Is there some trick to getting the 64 bit installation interface loaded/started on the 32 bit XP? Or is it just a limitation with the 32 bit reading the 64 bit DVDs boot info? By the way there are certainly a lot of 64 bit Vista drivers that don't like 64 bit Win7. I find the amount of compatable vista drivers with the 32 bit version much more willing to play nice. And that's the 32 bit build 7057 vs. the 64 bit build 7077.

I don't think you can start the 64bit installation from a 32bit installation of any OS. So you are probably stuck the way you are luvhuffer. But what do you mean that 7 wants to be on C, do you mean that actual partition, or just a partition that 7 wants to call C? If the latter, you can just change the drive letter later. If it actually wants to be on your 32bit XP C partition, then thats odd?.. why can't you point it elsewhere?

If I load win7 it's on C and the XP installation is on whatever the OS decides to call it. If I load XP it's just the opposite. I'm talking different drives here not both wanting to be on the same partition. If I try to change the letter in disk management it gives me some unlawful or illegal parameter or some such error message. Same thing in safe mode. Since I was going to uninstall it any way, first I actually took possession (ownership) of the whole drive and it still wouldn't change it for me. This switching drive letters just doesn't work out. So I'm thinking tomorrow, I'll pull out one of my backup systems and install the 64 bit system first, then XP 32 and see how that goes.

I really want to see how much being able to use all 4GB's of installed memory works. In Win7 32 bit, my aquamark3 bench is 161,000. In XP Home it's 225,000. The last time I tried running with the drive letters yo yo-ing back and forth, I ended up with a bunch of corrupted word files and mp3's so I'm really not ready to try doing any gaming on the 64 bit till it gets sorted. I'm back to XP, and Build 7057 32bit for now.

Does anyone else have Windows 7 with two graphics cards, ATI and Nvidia? Thanks to WDDM 1.1 they work together now (didn't in Vista). I'm not 100% sure if it's related to that, but I get a BSOD every time I turn on my main monitor after Win7 has started. That is, I can't turn the monitor off, then come back and continue whatever I was doing.

Windbg says it's a driver fault.

I've found only one Nvidia driver version - 181.71. (edit: I installed Vista's 182.50, didn't help)

GeForce GTX260: DVI -> 30" LCD, DVI -> HDMI input on AV receiver

Ati Radeon X1550: DVI -> 20" LCD.

I've also tried switching 20" and HDMI displays, no effect.

Windows won't let you change the drive letter if there's a page file on the partition, there are boot files on the partition or the operating system is installed to that partition.

Is it such a big problem that you absolutely have to "keep" your drive letters intact between OSes?

Files get corrupted. It may be because I have programs on a separate non OS partition. But it doesn't seem that way. Some of the files that got corrupted were works word processor files on the XP partition. But I'm not trying to access them from 7. It won't give me permission. But all the data is backed up on another drive's partition so I don't need access to XP partition.

My HD4870 CrossFire setup works fine under 7... but it was a little tricky to get the drivers to install and run stable. If I remember correctly, I couldn't get CCC to install but after running some kind of "catalyst cleaning" software, it installed and I was able to use the CF.

I am pondering whether to install windows 7 on my laptop, which is currently running vista. Will i see a performance change for the better? I'm also upgrading my laptop RAM from 1gb to 4gb, maybe that should help with things.

Windows 7 RC (Release Candidate) is on track for download by MSDN and TechNet subscribers. Broader, public availability will begin on May 5th.

So, we are not talking so much about Windows 7 and should I get it, because its not even released yet. And when it does get released, and I'm not talking RC, it will obviously cost money to purchase.

If you want to test or trial run, the present Beta (or soon to be released RC edition for Windows 7) then go for it, it would be nice to hear the feedback, as stated from many replies here. But be nice and clear about all this, the present Windows 7 version is not the final release, and you will likely (well basically you will) uninstall it, when the final version is available. Who wants beta when you can have the real thing.

Go ahead and install to test, I can't wait to see and hear what its like ;)
But you could just as well install Vista SP2 RC as well ;) Is that good too?

Just wanted to update what I'm doing. I'm currently on build 7100 64bit. I went ahead and set the dual boot up again. I'm just letting it switch drive letters again. So when on 7 the root drive is C and the XP partition becomes G. When on XP the root drive is C and the 7 partition becomes G. The other 4 partitions letter designations remain static. So far I'm not seeing the corruption problems I had earlier.

2 things about this build. The cursor is onespace off. So if I go and try to separate one and space, I place the cursor arrow between the e and the s and right click then the cursor line goes between the s and the p. Haven't quite figured out WTF is up with that? No biggie though. The second thing is build 7100 loads a bit slower than the previous betas.

Can't wait till the 5th. Boy, the vista betas sure didn't exactly have me drooling in anticipation for their RC. The only problem I'm having with the 64 bit, it seems my Canon lide30 scanner is a casualty of the switch. They didn't do any 64 bit drivers for vista and none will be coming for 7 I'm sure. Which relegates it to the closet grave yard for obsolete hardware and broken Sony audio equipment.

Having read through loads of articles on XP upgrading. What is the best way to upgrade to Windows 7?? I have read articles, saying to upgrade to vista, than xp, but that would be a waste of money for me. Looking to find a solution ready for the RC tomorrow.

Windows 7 is still in pre-release. The only way to intall Windows 7 Ultimate RC 7100 is to do a "clean" install. I have been running Windows 7 beta 7000 on a separate hard drive from my Vista Home Premium, SP1 install. You can copy files from one OS to the other. My Vista is 32-bit, and my Windows 7 is 64-bit. I was able to move my music, documents and pictures from Vista to Windows 7 easily. Windows 7 and Vista 64-bit can handle most 32 bit applications. Back up your important files and do a Windows 7 clean install

I got the Windows 7 RC x64 7100 download and key from TechNet today. It took about 40 minutes to download, and I used DVD Decrypter to burn the .iso file to a DVD... I am visiting friends in Las Vegas, but I will be home Friday. My friend had me install the Windows 7 x64 RC on his system. The clean install went well. I will install it Friday on my dual boot system

Just wondering since the RC is now out, has anyone had any trouble installing it on a virtual Machine?
I tried last night to install it on Sun VirtualBox but when it comes to entering the product key it says its denied. I used the one Microsoft gave me and refreshed the page to try a couple of different ones but none seem to work...any one had the same problem. This happened with the Beta as well and so never got round to running it.
I’m installing it on a completely separate hard drive to My windows install and have everything at minimum system requirements and above so that’s no problem. If not then il wait a bit and see if any more news comes out.
Also just to say when it comes to install is says Windows Vista on the main start page and not Windows 7. Do you think this has anything to do with it or is it just my bad luck?

You don't have to enter the product key during the setup.

But you will need the key to activate the software within 30 days. I believe that a Windows 7 beta key will work with Windows 7 RC

Well i did try that but thats were my second problem came in you see. When it comes to select the version, its not Windows 7 but Vista

It asks to select Windows Vista Home premium and such for some unknown reason. This is the only .iso i have in the folder in loading it from so its definitely the only thing i downloaded from Microsoft, so its bugging me as to why its done this.

I'm going to try and re download and use a different Virtual machine to see if it does anything different but this must be why it wont accept the key.

Windows 7 RC internet help

last night i set up a partition and installed Windows 7 RC so i can dual boot to either XP or Win 7....everything was working fine with it and then i went to bed....when i woke up my computer had put itself into sleep mode and i woke it up and noticed i didnt' have internet anymore....i ran through the diagnostics and tried everything including resetting my modem/router...(wifes comp still has internet) nothing worked and it still says no internet connection and i am no longer on a home network and it cant detect a network either.....i restarted my comp and boot to XP and my internet works fine but in Win 7 it cant connect me.....has anyone else had this problem and fixed it?

Ok well my first attempt failed but ive installed VMware and its works fine on there, so it seems that VirtualBox has some issues with the RC candidate.

I installed the RC yesterday, today I set up the media center. Set it to record a show, come back to watch, and the video is all there, but no sound. I double checked nothing was muted, navagating through the stuff in media center makes the chimes like normal. I also opened some recordings I had made with 7057 and they had sound. So I checked live TV, no sound.

Something broke the sound in the RC. I've got a Hauppage PVR-250 card in the comp, and it was detected on first boot to desktop after installing, Windows downloaded the drivers automatically and installed them. Same as it had done with 7057.

Kinda sucks not having sound on TV.

I had no problem installing the RC x64 but one thing irritated me. When I went to install RivaTuner 2.09 and 2.24 I got the same message that "this version of Windows require all drivers to have a valid digital signature". Then, in a second window "Cannot load Riva Tuner64.sys driver" A third window said "Driver signing enforcement must be disabled in order to start Riva Tuner under Vista x64. Do you want to disable driver signing enforcement right now and reboot the system to apply these changes?" I did but it still wouldn't work. If I try "troubleshooting compatability it tries to load the 32bit XP drivers under windows compatibility mode. And I can't seem to find where I need to go to disable driver signing enforcement? I also tried all the other run as administrator etc. stuff.

I didn't have this problem with the previous builds. Speed fan didn't work either so now I have nVidias overclock bloat wear just to run the GPU fan at 100%, which is necessary because this 8800GT runs really hot. like 66C at idle with full fan and into the 90's when gaming. I ordered an Accelero S1 R2 today. The only other thing that is bugging me is when I place the cursor and left click on a doc, it marks it one space back. Small potatoes but irritating none the less.

Edit. I can find no drivers that work with my Realtek HD sound, and I can't get Audacity to record anything. This has been with all previous builds as well.

Hello everyone,

Since windows 7 is now in its RC status i want to install it on my pc...
I wanted to know if my pc is compatible for windows 7 so I ran the upgrade advisor and this is what i got from the upgrade advisor

Upgrade: i can do an in-place upgrade to windows 7 home premium or ultimate
Ram: 1.25 available i can run the 32 bit version but i need 2 GBs of ram to run the 64 bit(which i have no intention of running) but I will buy more memory
Windows Aero: cant run that my graphics adapter wont support it so i definately need a better one

Sound works, Ati radeon xpress 200 series( my vid card) will also work

Now i'm planning on buying a dvd-burner( so i can burn the iso of windows 7) and everything else i need to make my pc run windows 7 smoothly
NewPicture2.jpg

NewPicture1.jpg

i have no idea what my graphics adapter is but here are my pc specs above

Let me know what i need, i dont want to buy anything too expensive(referring to graphics card)

help would be appreciated

first of all you can't upgrade from XP to Win7 so if you're running Vista you should probably have the same results with Win7 vis a vie Aero etc. Secondly, you never want to replace your current OS with a release candidate unless you don't care about your data or have it all backed up to another partition/drive or CD. The ISO needs to burn to a DVD and pretty much any DVD burner will work. You can download Everest Home Edition and expend the Display tree double click on PCI /AGP adapter and the window on the left will tell you what your video adapter is. Or go to start/run type in msinfo32.exe hit Ok go to components/display and find out what the adapter is.

ok thanks for the info
I am running vista basic sp1
i backed up my data to an external HD

ok i have ati radeon express with 64 mb of ram -_-.... would getting a video adapter with 512 mb be compatible with windows 7??

If you're running Vista, then as far as the eye candy goes you should have a similar result with Win7. I don't think the requirements are any different. And for the most part your Vista drivers should be compatable with Win7 so the upgrade should be pretty smooth. If your video adapter only has 64MB's of memory, pretty much anything would be an improvement. It depends on your budget. The new Radeon 4770 with GDDR5 memory is supposed to be a monster for $99 if you're on a budget
