Internet2 apparently heavily used for piracy

By Derek Sooman on April 13, 2005, 12:26 PM
Seemingly, sneaky people have been using the ultra-fast Internet2 to swap movies and music. Internet2, which is not publicly available yet, can currently only be accessed by institutions such as leading universities. Apparently, Internet2 is at present awash with the trading of pirated media, and in a suit to be filed Wednesday, the Washington-based Recording Industry Association of America has accused hundreds of college students of illegally using it for sharing files. And once the RIAA is involved, well... I wonder how many college students will be getting threatened with jail this time.

"Right now the Internet2 is a zone of lawlessness when it comes to theft of music and movies and that just can't be allowed to continue." - RIAA President Cary Sherman.

Internet2 is a crap name. But actually, this is pretty cool story, if a little sad.P2P file sharing seems to be everywhere, even into something as state of the art as Internet2 is supposed to be. Can we really see an end to this advancing tide? Maybe the next version of the internet itself will work on P2P and maybe browsers will have stuff like bittorrent:// and P2P:// in them when we get the next generation internet (if ever.) Actually, I think maybe the bittorrent one works already with a proper plugin, but you get what I mean.

I dunno, the more I hear about the RIAA getting pissed at downloads, the more songs I find myself downloading just to spite them."Oh noz! We couldn't do anything about cassettes or CDs or even DVDs but we have legal room on this one! wewt! Let's make poor college students pay / go to jail and not worry about everyone overseas selling bootleg cds and dvds"Idea: How about getting some artists that have more than one good song? Then people would be inclined to spend money on your product. Hmm college kids have to work an average of two hours at some crap job to get one cd because they like one song...... I'm not seeing a reasonable tradeoff here.

Internet 2 is a separate network, running IPv6 as opposed to IPv4. Both use a variety of transmission methods, including fiber and copper lines.

There's nothing different about it except the speed of the connections. I agree about the name too though, it's ridicoulous. It's the same internet just faster. All well.
