Japanese to work on a rival to Google
The impetus is believed to come indirectly from the IT research department of the office of Junichiro Koizumi, the Prime Minister. He has embraced the internet as a political tool, and has emphasised Japan’s need to extend its presence in the world of information technology.

Thats quite an undertaking and with only a $60 million dollar budget to dethrone a billion dollar company. Unless Google really screws up in the next 3 years, I don't see this project having any merit. It doesn't even specify if languages besides Japanese will be supported. |

[quote]Do they really have a reason?[/quote]Corporate dominance and control - the usual.To be honest, while it's debateable as to whether or not the now corporate giant Google still has it, a large part of the reason that it was so successful and grew so large was the ethos of its creators and their vision - it was intended to be innovative, friendly, and very ethical.Could any group involving major multi-nationals such as the "master of rootkits" (aka sony) achieve the same? |

Sony did ten years ago, before they changed president. I recently read that they have a new vice-pres. that wants them to focus on home A/V only. They might sell their insurances company, bank, cell phone company, etc. (All the unrelated things) |

Well i don't know, competition is a good thing. Keeps one company from getting to lazy. And personally i think microsoft could use some serious competition as well...but that is kind of besides the point. |

I don't know about you but i'm waiting for a Google OS. Then we'll see whether Google still has potential. As for this joke of a venture, why compete with Google. Its practically perfect and FREE!!! What can we gain, as Google is still expanding and is definitly not getting lazy. As for Micosorft, its not lazy just too full of ego to move around. |

Microsoft will remain Microsoft and control the OS market, and Google will control the Search engine market. People got used to that. It's simple as that. |

I agree with Rage google and MS are not going anywere anytime soon. But i say go for it Japan. Competition is good for business. More companies = more choices.barfarf |

the japanese have used this strategy before, but i'm not sure if it would work in this situation. |
