China shuts down porn sites

By Derek Sooman on May 1, 2006, 5:17 AM
Chinese censorship of the Internet continues; this time Beijing has shut down six pornographic websites, to prevent them from "corrupting" any Chinese people who might look at them. Condemning the sites as "unhealthy content", Beijing shut down several sites, including ‘www.ysdm.com’ and ‘www.xf13.net’. The operators of several sites have been given a short period of time to clean up their site's content, after an investigation ruled that they were unsuitable for Chinese people to look at.

In 2004, Chinese government kicked off a massive campaign to weed out pornography from the rapidly-growing Internet and in 2005, 11 people were jailed for up to 12 years for running an obscene website in the country's largest case of Internet pornography.

huh, i totaly dissagree with any government having that much power...then again.....but even still, on this one, i'm totaly with them. That's garbage, and it's deaming, and hurts everyone (yes i know my sentence structure is poor today). honestly i wish the US gov would do this too. As long as power is being abused...do something good with it....that did't quite sound as i intended it....oh well..

Pretty soon, no one will be allowed to take their clothes of EVER - even to have sex in private! Anyone who agrees with this kind of trash is an *****; no government (even China) should have this kind of power over what an INDIVIDUAL CHOOSES to submit his/her-self to in the privacy of their home.nathanskywalker: You couldn't have possibly said anything less intelligent. Since when is nudity and sex among CONSENTING ADULTS, even for money, a bad thing? It's a personal choice. It's not a question of wrong and right, you may hate what someone else may like.

"Anyone who agrees with this kind of trash is an *****" - I really shouldn't have said that, and I apologize for my indiscretion. It really was an inconsiderate and rash statement. From the TS Community guidelines: "Criticize ideas, not people. We won’t stand, nor support personal flaming."I said: "You couldn't have possibly said anything less intelligent" - I was criticizing the lack of thought behind the idea presented (abuse of power, unjustified censorship, unlawful violation of free speech), not the intelligence of the speaker himself. I guess I could have more clearly worded that statment and I'm sorry if there was confusion.

Yea whatever, I don't know why people fear that the government would have too much power to stop porn who the majority dislike and when the government kills free speech is ok. Do you honestly believe that there is a country with free speech, even in here in the US, many people get killed in this country for free speech to this day and age (Believe it or not). In all country, free speech is ok when not many people heard of what you said but then it becomes a crime when a quarter of population heard of what you said.

And this is not a personal comment or anything, but if you want to know why i said what i said...well that could get complicated..but i believe in absolutes, i believe that there is a right, and a wrong, and when people do the "wrong" they get hurt, and hurt other people. I don't like to see that. I've nothing against sex (that would be weird), inside of marriage that is. But if you look at America and look hard, look how far downhill we've gone, look at all the bad things that are happening...mabye China is not trying to stop this, and mabye they're doing it the wrong way....but follow the news....people get hurt because of this stuff, it destroyes families, if you don't believe in absolutes, just look at life, see the effects, can anything that causes this much bad not be wrong? China is communist, overbearing, and uses way to mucn power, and has way to much power. China should not have done many things they have done. You know they also kill Christians over there? all the time, just for they're beliefs, so no, i'm not a supporter of their government, just saying they make a right decision....every so often. Good day to ya'll

Thanks for reading our guidelines...In this particular topic I agree that the Chinese government should not have the power to shut down pornography sites. That is like shutting down Playboy, Hustler (you have seen the movie right?), and even some other more hardcore sources for "adult entertainment". IMO, there is a line that divides the entertainment and the plain criminal side of pornography, say for example child porn and other such practices that should be penalized heavily.

I am the only one that feels it is a bit wierd that pornography movies are by law not authorized to air before midnight? (it is like that in Sweden anyway)But still it is ok to at "prime time" i.e. 21:00 or even 20:00 show a movie whre the brains of people get shot out against a wall and dribble down?Am I the only one that feels that the latter is if anything a worse thing for kids to see than the first? Afterall sex is normal, blowing someones brains out is not... Or maybe I got it all backwards?
