Super Talent puts first 512GB SSD into retail

If you're a fan of solid state drives and have $1500 to burn, Super Talent has just the thing for you. While other vendors have already announced development of 512GB SSDs, Super Talent's new MasterDrive RX series is the first to actually hit the market. Only one unit out of the five in the series carries this much data, but it does so in a 2.5-inch form factor that claims read and write speeds as fast as 230 and 160MBps respectively.

Looking back a few years, it is impressive to see how quickly SSDs are catching up in terms of size to desktop hard drives. The largest mechanical disks currently available are 1TB to 2TB in size, making Super Talent's new drive only half to a quarter as large. I doubt Super Talent will see much demand for such an expensive drive, but it is still exciting to see an SSD this large. You can read more after the jump.
Super Talent Announces World’s First Commercially Available 512GB 2.5-Inch SSD

MasterDrive RX with RAIDSSD™ Technology enables blazing fast Read at 230MB/sec and Write at 200MB/sec

San Jose, California – April 8, 2009 – Super Talent Technology, a leading manufacturer of Flash storage solutions and DRAM memory modules, today announced that it is now shipping the MasterDrive RX family of Solid State Drives (SSDs) in capacities up to 512GB.

The MasterDrive RX features Super Talent’s proprietary RAIDSSD™ Technology to enable extremely fast sequential read and write speeds. The MasterDrive RX with MLC NAND Flash comes in 128GB, 256GB and 512GB densities and is rated for a maximum sequential read speed of 230MB/sec and a maximum sequential write speed of 160MB/sec. The MasterDrive RX with SLC Flash comes in 128GB and 256GB densities and is rated for a maximum sequential read speed of 230MB/sec and a maximum sequential write speed of 200MB/sec.

Jeremy Werner, senior product marketing manager at Super Talent, stated “The MasterDrive RX is the latest product utilizing our patented RAIDSSD™ Technology. This product is great! From a performance standpoint it’s like having two SSDs in the space of one, and it extends our standard 2.5” SATA-II product line to include a 512GB SSD.” The 512GB MasterDrive RX retails for under $1500.

All these products are designed to be compatible with all known operating systems including Windows, Linux, and OSX. Super Talent backs the SLC versions with a 3-year warranty and the MLC versions with a 2-year warranty.

I'm just gonna say "wow," That cost as much as a brand new pc.

That's a jaw-dropping increase in capacity. I have to wonder how these devices stack up to regular disk technology in terms of MTBF, read/write capacity and error rates, though. My first HDD was a $250 Seagate 20MB marvel so I suppose I shouldn't sound so picky...
