Connectify turns Windows 7 laptops into Wi-Fi hotspots

Few years ago a little-known feature called Virtual Wi-Fi was crafted by Microsoft's research group as a way to "virtualize" one wireless card as several separate adapters in Windows. The project was discontinued in 2006, but some of the code apparently made its way into Windows 7, and now at least one company is taking advantage of it with a new application that can turn any laptop into a wireless access point.

Developed by military consulting firm Nomadio, Connectify lets a laptop "tether" other wireless devices to a single Internet connection by effectively turning it into a software-based wireless router. Windows 7 is required on the notebook acting as a wireless hotspot, but any wireless-equipped device, including handhelds and other notebooks running whatever operating system can jump online without any additional software. The program even encrypts traffic to and from the software hotspot using WPA2-Personal (AES) encryption.

While the Connectify beta is free to download, Nomadio expects to charge users once the complete version is released in about six weeks. A free, ad-supported version might also be released down the road.

Its great. If you have desktop system wifi enabled you can use it like a router for your laptop, or phone.

How very instructive - first I think 'hey that's amazing' then I learn I could already do it with Vista on my wi-fi equipped laptop . I wonder how many other features I have never discovered. I'll blame the manufacturer for not including a proper printed manual with the computer - but really its my own laziness and ignorance. Joining tech-spot should remedy the second characteristic ...

As long as it is easy to setup, I might use it!

this could be useful for people with iPod touches, where 1 person has a laptop.

Or a netbook with integrated 3G

Yeh this is very useful, spcially if you have a wifi dead spot. I have a tool like this on my windows mobile and it works really well when you cannot get an internet connection on your laptop!

It definitely could come in handy whenever you have to pay for expensive Wi-Fi & want to share the connection.

I personally see it as being an awesome way to extend my wifi range, and maybe will one day be very helpful for extending range into areas that could not get any high speed internet before. I love the idea it has possibilities even it ends up not working out to well.

I mostly use Linux and have Ubuntu 9.10 and Fedora 12(beta) on this laptop with Windows 7 as a new addition. Windows 7 was a free upgrade I got in the mail from Dell.

Connectify will make it very simple for me to let any of my friends use my connection when I travel. It might also make for some interesting fun while at the local cafe' (wink, wink, nod, nod), as sharing your Internet connection on Linux can be somewhat complicated for most people.
