Weekend Open Forum: What's the first video game you ever played, and on what platform?

Visiting Google's homepage today you'll get a fun surprise: the company has transformed its ever-changing website logo into a fully functional game of Pac-Man to celebrate the classic arcade's upcoming 30th anniversary tomorrow. This is Google's first ever interactive, playable doodle and will stay active for 48 hours. To start playing, just hit "Insert Coin" where the "I'm Feeling Lucky" button usually appears and use the arrow keys to gobble away.

By hitting the Insert Coin button a second time, two users can play simultaneously, controlling Ms. Pac-Man with the WASD keys. Much like the original Pac-Man, Google has programmed it to glitch and end at the 256th screen.

The game was imagined by Namco developer Toru Iwatani in 1979 -- partially inspired by a pizza missing a slice, as the story goes -- and reached the U.S. in the fall of 1980 after being renamed from "Puck Man". At a time when shooter games such as Space Invaders ruled the arcades, Iwatani's creation stood out for its originality and simplicity. Pac-Man was an immediate success and has been credited with expanding video gaming to a wider audience.

As you stroll down memory lane remembering the good ol' days when you scrambled for quarters to hit the arcades, we want to ask you: what was the first game you ever played? If you didn't think much of it, what was the first title (and platform) that really got you into gaming? I remember playing River Raid quite a bit on an Atari 2600 back in the day -- and never got the hang of E.T., man that game was awful. Discuss.

  1. Abuse, on PC (Windows 95). Lots of Blood & Gore, and I was only 6! Man, I loved it... played it constantly... would do anything to fire that laser-rifle once more.

  2. It was either Wolfenstein 3D where I would keep playing until I got motion sickness or Street Fighter II where I would keep playing until I got blisters on my thumbs.

  3. Dig Dug Version PC.

    1987, well is wonder years....

    Gretings

  4. The first game I ever played was Super Mario Bros. I was 3 years old when I started playing.

  5. I don't know if it counts, but since I was a baby, my older brother had amiga with full plenty of games. Ocasionally I played on it since I was able to.

Then was an pegasus era (I still don't know, what clone it was), but it was pretty short, and ended when first PC arrived to my home. I think the first computer video game which I played many hours and still remember (and still play from time to time) was Doom 2.

    That's my short story :P

  6. We had one of the original PONG consoles. It had 2 dials and 2 switches to toggle between tennis and pong (although it was really the same game).

Not too long after that though my parents gave me an Intellivision gaming console. Sigh. It was one of the best presents I ever received.

  7. mighty magus on CIP03

    (Z80 compatible)

  8. Black Cauldron on PC was the 1st game.

Super Mario on NES was the first console game I played.

  10. Solaris on the Atari 2600. At 8 years old it was literally outerspace.

  11. Uncertain which game that was the first, but it was on a Commodore 64.

  12. It was Test Drive on c-64

  13. pit-fall on Atari 2600. then i graduated to N64 after that caught on fire. first computer game was doom on a library computer in school

  17. First console game played: Beserk for Atari 2600 (first corridor shooter ever made)

First handheld game played: Wrestlemania Tiger games handheld (really early 90's or late 80's)

First arcade game ever played: either Galaga, Ghosts n Goblins, or Rolling Thunder (around 1984 I believe)

First PC game ever played: Blakestone (early 90's)

First owned console game played: Warhawk for PSX (wasn't allowed to own a console until I was like 15)

First owned handheld game played: Bugs Bunny Crazy Castle for Gameboy (the original pea-green screen white brick) (early 90's)

First owned PC game played: Sub-Space ( http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/SubSpace_%28video_game%29 ) What a fun game this one was, wonder if the Euro servers are still up for this game? (1998 when I owned my first PC)

  18. I will always remember Dragon's Lair in the arcade... Don't think it was my first, but a favorite from childhood.

  19. Fire ant on the commodore +4

  20. Ironically when i first played Space invaders on an Atari back in the late 80s I actually hated it. Then a few years later I got hooked on to the original Prince on the PC and never looked back since then.

  21. Pong, on an original standalone machine in a mall arcade.

  22. Hero's quest (later became Quest for Glory) , Intel 286

    Man that game was tricky.

You had to enter commands to the guy on the screen by typing. Like:

    "take wallet"

  23. bru my mom used to spend her life playing Gold runner and Mappy (the original nintendo)

I used to spend my life (after the [police, space, heroes] Quest series) playing Baldurs Gate, Dungeon Keeper and Halflife against my brothers.

  24. Snake, on a micro running CP/M

Closely followed by Leisure Suit Larry in the Land of the Lounge Lizards
