Weekend Open Forum: How often do you beat games?
Mass Effect 2 doesn't suffer from any of those issues as far as we know. In fact, it's about as good as games come these days, as evidenced by its PC metascore of 94. So we have to wonder if a 50% completion rate is actually pretty decent for a successful modern release. I'm certainly guilty of buying games and not beating them. Looking at my collection, I'd say I've only finished about 20% of the titles, and that mostly boils down to a lack of time. How about yourself? How many unbeaten games are in your library and what's stopping you from reaching the end?

I unfortunetly win games, left, right and center. In fact I was having a discussion with a co-worker about how quality is now affecting the length of a game. In Call of Duty, I believe the campaign is around 5 hours. Same goes for Halo. I enjoy playing games, but for a challenge, I've now gone too MMORPG games, as there is no ending.

I usually finish the singleplayer in games but very rarely go back and try harder difficulties. Bioware seem to be an exception in 2 ways for me, Dragon Age I never finished but Mass Effect 1-2 I went back and did on Insanity.
I have no idea why I left Dragon Age, it's better done than Mass Effect (on PC) and story isn't half bad. Could be some lingering bitterness of having to buy a DLC just to get a storage but probably not the only reason
Dragon Age was the last game I finished, It was awesome!! although the last battle took me around 45 minutes, and a lot of health potions!!

For me, I try to finish a game if I have it. If it's a good game, like God of War, I will finish it several times : )
However I wont force myself to finish a game that I don't feel compelled to play. First and foremost, the story has to be riveting. If I don't care what happens to the characters, I most likely wont waste my time.
However, if the story is worth while I will usually finish the game. For example, the original Mafia game. I have played the first three quarters of that game at least 5 times. Due to stupid things like viruses and corrupted kernls I have had to reformat my computer a few times. Each time I will plug Mafia back into the machine and try to finish it before the next pain in the arse I have with my computer rears it's ugly, lumpy head.

The ones I have finished are typically the single player campaigns of multiplayer games - such as Modern Warfare and MW2. It's kind of a big deal for me because before that I used to beat everything... coincidentally, I've been married for 11 years

Games, games, games....so many games. I began playing games (and not finishing them) with ColecoVision.
I don't finish some games because they stop entertaining me. They become boring, irrelevant in terms of story/plot, or frankly they become too laborious and repetitive. Games that I do finish (and occasionally play through again) remain compelling, challenging, fresh and conquerable. A game has those desireable qualities when it is original, graphically well presented, bug free and has adequate depth and scope (meaning it's big, diverse and takes more than 10 hours to complete).
I find little appeal in the multi-player aspect of games - I always get beat so where's the fun in that!

Are you suggesting the skills required for golf are similar to those of playing video games? Because the last/only time I was at a driving range, I tree'd the driver. (And not on purpose).

Oh not at all, I merely meant that the number of tee times severely declined.
How do you "tree" a driver?

I scored a couple of billion at Atari "Defender" one night, although the game never technically ends. At some point you just have to walk away from banality, lest ye be consumed by it. (A "couple billion" is possibly an exaggeration. Forgive me, it was soooo very long ago). That said, I was sorely disappointed when the "Atari" game pack for the PC didn't include it.

I normally make it most of the way through a game, get to a part I can't beat and set it down, then a month or two later I come back and finish.
Although recently when I bought Portal I played it through in a few days (not that it took me a few days to finish, I just savored it in little bits).
Portal was such a short game, but I can't wait for Portal 2! -

better with 'shrooms'...if you manage to get air, it becomes a beautiful ,loving, dimpled orb in the sky..just for you....ah the good ole' daze.

The only games I've ever finished were, Doom 1&2, Quake 1&2, the good old Prince of Persia (on PC), EEII .......... I guess that is about it.

Hmm. I've never really wondered how often I beat a game... Jak 1 took me three days. Jak 3 took me three days. Fallout 3, 3 days. Far Cry 2, 3 days. Prince of Persia, 3 days. Roughly, I can beat a campaign in about three days usually. But for totally epic games such as Mass effect 1, no less than 1 month.
Btw. It took me 9 months to get ME2 *working*... - I've just recently figured out the "-nomovies" trick. Thanks for the NoSpoilers-warning, TechSpot

With very rare exception, I'll finish games I start. But I do have a 5-hour rule. If I'm not feeling engaged by the 5th hour of play, I'll drop it. Doesn't happen very often, though.
Games are like reading a book to me, only you get to be a participant. And I very rarely put down a book until I've finished it too.
My problem is buying more games than I can play. My Steam catalog is ridiculous thanks to their sales. If I didn't buy another game for the next 2 years (fat chance), I don't know if I'd still be able to finish all the games I've purchased. :p

I have to agree with breech on this. I have completed 80-90% of all of the games that I own or have owned, and I prefer single player campaigns to the multiplayer portion of most games. On certain games like HL2, Portal, CoD4, SW Knights of the Old Republic (I prefer it to many more recent RPGs) I have completed the campaign 2, 3, even 4 times. But maybe it's just me. :-]

I knoooowwww, I have the same problem with Russian "Art Photo" sets. (I'd like to make a few thousand shots into wallpaper).
May be you can use some virtual desktop creation utility, and by creating several desktops, you can set multiple wallpapers hence speeding up the overall process. Just a thought you know

I think it should be taken out that picture of the ME2 final boss, I have beaten already the game but if I didnt the game would be spoiled for me. For example I beat ME1 two years after release.
