Weekend Open Forum: Did you jump on the 3D bandwagon?

A couple of years ago it seemed like not a day could go by without someone announcing something 3D-related. TV manufacturers raced to one-up each other with 3D-capable television sets, some requiring no glasses but offering poor viewing angles, while companies in the gaming world also worked -- and still do -- to offer stereoscopic 3D gaming experiences alongside the traditional 2D mode for those who want it. Hell, even Nintendo went all out launching the 3DS gaming handheld.

Fast forward to today and besides a few high profile movies showing in theaters, it doesn’t seem like much progress has been made to spur 3D's transition to people’s living rooms. In fact, only 2% of TVs in the U.S. are able to show 3D programming, according to the most recent data from research firm IHS Screen Digest.

Those of us who live and breathe technology are often the ones taking the leap to buy the latest gizmos. So, today we want to know: did you jump on the 3D bandwagon at home? If so, do you regret your purchase? Also, tell us if you use it for gaming or movies, and how often you find yourself wearing your not-so-fashionable 3D spectacles.

  1. No my thing was its a cool feature for about 5 min to show your neighbors and friends but sitting on your couch with bulky glasses on for a 2 hour movie doesnt work. My LED Samsung 120 hz 55 inch already looks near 3D without being 3D when a blu ray movie is playing. Plus the $40 per 3D Blu ray cost is a turn off too.

  2. I have never bought a 3D TV. I was too afraid to watch porn on one

Afraid of getting poked in the eye?

We have a 3D TV but not because I wanted one. A) The wife was adamant on a Sony. B) It seemed like ALL Sony TV's were 3D, not sure if they still are C) We got a great deal on it. We even got free 3D glasses that were worth $200 that have been collecting dust for months.

I would love a TV that just does what a TV does. No integrated Netflix, no 3D, NOTHING. Just give me great picture quality and sound and DONE.

  3. Let me wrap my arms around Yosafbrig from Firefly and I'll buy your TV! But seriously, I always passed off 3D TV as a sales gimmick from manufactures. Give me lower prices, larger screen and better picture quality that's all I'm asking for.

As it is for the next big thing, I'd quicker jump on a 4K TV than jump to 3D.

I was more afraid of getting wet.

Seriously though, I bought a Visio 37 inch 1080p at Walmart on sale for $299 if I recall the price correctly. It has such a clear picture that I sat it on my desk and use it for my computer monitor.

  5. I looked at the TV's in Wal-Mart last week and noticed there was hardly any mention of 3D anywhere even though many of the TV's were 120 Hz.

  6. I got a LG Cinema 3D LED TV (42inch). I've only got one 3D bluray (because they like 2.5times the price of the normal blu-ray and I got it free with my PS3) - Pirates of the Caribean. I must say, it is incredible! It doesn't hurt my eyes, it's depth is stunning. The only shortfall is the block-like glasses. They reflect the light that is behind you because they so square. Otherwise I would definitely recommend

  7. I own an Asus 3D monitor and find its more a show off tool at lans then anything else.

  8. To everyone who doesn't believe 3D is (and will be) an essential part of gaming, you'll change your opinion after the release of the Xbox 720 and PS4. It will have to reach the mainstream to become acceptable. PC gamers are always 2 steps ahead of consolers. Better or worse 3D is the future.

If you haven't tried 3D on a true 3D monitoring using 3D ready software (Batman Arkm City), your missing out a truly amazing experience. I'll never go back to 2D.

  9. My first 3d movie in theatre was avatar and unfrotunatly I came out with a headache and most of the movie was blurry to me. I don't have any problemes with my eyes. probably the way my brain processes it. I don't know. What I do know is the 3d technology as of right now is not for me.

  10. Most of these movies barely have any 3D in them anyways. The only one that actually felt 3D was Avatar.

  11. I took my daughter (and all the little 8 year old girls she invited over for her b-day slumber party) to the IMAX 3D movie Frankenweenie last night and it was actually pretty decent. None of the kids complained about the glasses even though I did because mine were fogging up due to heat. The effects were pretty good as well but you had to look straight at the screen without turning your head.

  12. Call me crazy but I dont think 3d is really that good cause im sure ill eyes dont need further straining then it already gets. but to me this is just another case of older technology being better than the new technology. im obviously not saying this with all technology.
