X-Setup
6
Record Mode
Essentially
this feature is intend for those with access to multiple PC’s which you wish
to universally apply your tweaks to, or perhaps if just want to produce a file
detailing what registry settings were changed. Here’s a shot of the Recording
tab.
Once
the changes to the current system have been made you can finish recording, save
the file with the .reg extension & simply execute this file (Merge
into your registry) on your other systems to apply the exact same tweaks to
these systems. Or perhaps alternatively you may wish to use this mode so
you’ll have your tweaks stored in a few registry files, ready to be merged
onto your system again in the event of a re-install or whatever.
Safety
As
with most Utilities of this type you may, no doubt be concerned with exactly
what settings they are changing on your system, or how safe it is to change
certain settings. X-Setup 6 nicely addresses all these issues, something that,
basically nothing else I’ve used before comes even close.
The
Options section contains a few settings that allow you to make X-Setup 6
a bit safer to use for the less-experienced user. Shown below is the Security
tab.
As
you can see, Ticking these options will result in requiring a certain
amount of authorization for X-Setup to perform certain actions, particularly
with those effecting important system settings. While this doesn’t guarantee
anything, it at least makes you aware that you are performing potential harmful
actions. Below is what happens when I try load the Windows Service Pack Fix
Plug-in with the Warning Messages enabled.
Clearly you can’t make any
mistake about whether or not you are about to load an important system Plug-in.
In
the Display tab you can disable the display of such Critical
system Plug-ins in the first place. This will, of course, limit some of the
options available, but that’s the price for added safety.
The
final bit of icing on the virtual cake being the ability to log exactly what
X-Setup performs. You can customize the logging types in the Logfile tab.
