Hi,

I havne't been able to view secure pages on my pc for a week or so now. I have followed various suggestions found online like, clearing caches, ensuring ssl boxes are checked, uninstalled xp sp2 + norton, disabled firewalls; I am using ie6, but the same problem happens with mozilla and opera. Any suggestions would be graetly appreciated.

Wow, okay, before anything, REINSTALL NORTON AND SP2!!!

I've never heard of those suggestions for fixing https problems. Well, I'll admit i haven't heard of many https problems, but i'm still gonna try to help.

Now, first of all, see if you are able to view the pages using an alternative browser such as FireFox or Opera.

If you ARE able to see https pages with those, then I have two suggestions:

-Ditch IE6. It's crap anyway.

-Check IE6's security settings.

If you cound NOT view https pages with either of those, then get back to me here.

Oh... wait, it happens with mozilla and opera too.... oops, didn't notice that.

In that case, I think I have a tool that might help...

It's mondo helpful, fixes tons of problems that you wouldn't imagine would be so easy to fix.

If that doesn't work, I'll turn my brain on and get something that will.

Thanks so much for getting back to me. I downloaded the tool you suggested but it hasn't fixed the problem. I can't access windows update to download xp service pack 2 yet either. I'm using mozilla firefox now instead of IE6, and when trying to adjust connection settings, it's connecting through http proxy 5405, there are no ports specified for ssl, ftp, etc. Could this be the problem? When I spoke to my ISP they said I shouldn't be connecting through a proxy but if I change the connection settings to 'direct connection to the internet' I can't access any web pages at all.

Again, thank you so much for helping me. I will be infinitely, eternally grateful if we can get this fixed!!

Hm... Do you have any other computers you can test on that internet connection?

Also, use Windows' built-in automatic updates feature to get SP2 back since you can't use IE to get to Windows Update. That's veriliy important.

Did you try restarting the computer after running the tool?

Ye, I tried my laptop on that connection and its fine, and I restarted after using the tool.

I had issues with viruses on that pc, particularly surfsidekick3 and after a long headache managed to get rid of it. Could that have something to do with it?

Well should be direct.. can u turn firewall off (whole service) for while and then try again..

I've managed to totally get rid of surfsidekick using various programs. I've used registry mechanic, and winsockxpfix, to repair the registry. I haven't a clue what it could be now.

I've tried connecting without a firewall and can't view secure sites still. I also tried to amend connection settings to 'direct internet connection' while the firewall was off, but can't view any pages at all.

Any ideas?

Well if anything else fails u can allways made a new clean windoze install just backup important files first

And yes,sometimes when you remove viruses or spyware, it could accidentally damage parts of the registry or filesystem causing that kind of problem. That's what the WinSock XP Fix I linked to earlier is desidned to fix. But that didn't work, so I'm still trying to figure it out.

One more thing before IIIIIIIIII give up.. do u have firewall on router also? and sure about that windoze firewall is off? i cant really image anythng else some firewall is blockin that https port.. does someone knows better.......??

Not sure if there's a firewall on the router, but I don't think its that, it does the same with a dial-up connection. And there's definitely no windows firewall, I uninstalled xp sp2 as was told this might have been the cause so the firewall is gone.

...remove and then reinstall the TCP/IP protocol.. also reboot.. (Control panel/ Network Connections/ LAN/ properties (or chainge settings for this connection) and r u sure about those proxy settings.. check those one more time n type proxy server address and port in the Secure box..outta ideas

Try to drop the proxy and just do "Direct connection to the Internet"

That "5405" proxy seems kinda wierd to me, since a proxy is simply another computer that you use to connect to the internet through. It would have a full IP address like "45.234.87.123" and a port. "5405" is an example of a port, but most proxies use port 8080.

So i think the proxt settings are just wrong, so forget about the proxy and connect directly to the internet. I'm in Firefox 1.5 and it's the top option in Connection Settings.

There are a few good reason this can happen but the easiest to repair are covered on my webpage at pcfella co uk in the blogs section

The favourite is the re-registering of the DLL files and it's not as scary as it looks.

Obviously once you are up and running you'll have to make sure your Windows Updates and Antivirus updates are all in full working order.
