Are you including LotR: Battle for Middle Earth 2 and 1 in the Lord of the Rings (all)?

I think there is also standard LotR games, correct?

That may confuse others as it confuses me.

It may seem like a shameless plug, but I operate a site which may not have a focus on good games that run well with older hardware, but often happen to be older games that would run like dreams on even a mediocre machine today.

You may want to look at these games as well. We tend to favor RPGs and interesting shooters. The link is in my sig.

A lot of those games are multiplayer and I'm an avid fan of most.

Ok, You posted that CS:S runs good only under DX 7/8/8.1 hardware levels, yet with my 6200 and a 1.5Ghz Sempron, its running in 9.0c at no lower than 30 fps on nearly any map, usually higher, with the entire upper half of the options on high, with bloom HDR.

I think its good even on 9.0c. What do you think?

My definition of good performance is at least 60FPS, as far as shooters are concerned. That's the only reason for my recommendation. If you want, I'll specify that after the list, just so people know that they don't need to run it in DX8\8.1 mode only.

Well, I do notice the difference between 30 and 60, but barely. I have noticed that with my setup, the higher fps with CS:S, the more it shows my 45ms response time when moving the mouse...

But it's very much up to you Rage, it is your list. You can get that fps on Low, I am pretty sure.

I'll check that now, and let you know. In fact, I may start playing on low.

Ok, update for you.

My system, is to say the least, Odd. I believe I am getting bottlenecked by the fact that its only allowing AGP 4x and not 8x.

Sooo, whenever I turned it on low, it really didn't have much of an effect ( a whole 5 fps on average). Then, I turn it onto DX 8.1, and nothing happens in terms of FPS.

So once again, its up to you, but I don't see you having to have it set to lower DX levels.

AGP 4x and 8x will not make a difference. However, you should see a difference where DX8.1 and 9.0c are concerned. Are you sure you initialized the game in DX8.1 mode correctly?

Eh, what about Painkiller? That's a pretty fun run and gun arcade style shooter; I've been able to run it on some pretty low end systems.

Here are the min specs:

OS: Windows 98SE/ME/2000/XP
CPU: 1.5 GHz Pentium III or AMD Athlon processor
RAM: 384 MB
CD-ROM/DVD-ROM: 8X speed
Hard Drive Space: 1.2 GB available
Video: 64 MB DirectX 8.1 card with hardware
Transform & Lighting support (NVIDIA GeForce2)

Yeah, Painkiller is a nice old one. Thanks for the suggestion. However, I'm unable to update the list, since there's no edit button I can see next to the post. It's probably an issue with the recent update. I'll add Painkiller and Painkiller: Overdose to the list ASAP.

No edit button, really? There should be one with a little pair of scissors on it. Maybe it's because the thread is too old or something... Also, the TrackMania series is pretty scalable, pretty good stuff if you ask me. The recommended requirements for Sunrise are 1Ghz Pentium 4, 256MB RAM and a 64MB graphics card. The min specs are much lower.

Uh oh, I just noticed mine don't have an edit button either....

Anyway, Yes, I am dead sure I did it correctly. -dxlevel 81

Note, Its not using Steam. Nothing else will be said about that here, though.

There seems to be a time limit until which you can edit your posts. I hope Julio fixes it soon, because otherwise I won't be able to add new games to the list.
I'll try and get in touch with him if possible.

Agreed. The Longest Journey, Grim Fandango and a couple of other games also fall in that category IMO.

Underrated means it got lower scores than it deserved, you're probably thinking of something more like under appreciated.
