10.4 percent of Android devices are running Pie, Google confirms

Adoption woes: Google has always had trouble getting its latest Android versions to users. When you compare Android adoption rates to the user numbers of Apple's latest iOS updates, the difference is usually quite massive. This disparity is to be expected, of course. After all, Android is used by dozens of different phonemakers (and hundreds of different phones at this point), whereas Apple maintains a much tighter leash on iOS.

The fact that many Android phonemakers, such as Samsung, are notoriously slow to roll out the latest versions of the software to their customers' devices (if they arrive at all) certainly doesn't help.

However, it seems Android's latest version, Pie, isn't being impacted by these problems quite as heavily as its predecessor, Oreo. According to Android Police, Pie is currently installed across 10.4 percent of Android devices - that may not seem like much, but context matters here.

Android's previous version, Oreo, only had installation numbers around the 5.7 percent mark as of May last year, and that's after 9 months of availability. In the same period of time, Pie has far surpassed that figure.

So, while Google still has an awful long way to go before Pie reaches the user numbers of previous Android versions (such as Nougat, which was installed across 19.2 of Android devices near its peak), it's clear that things are moving in the right direction.

Soon, the old android and the new one will split into two races like people did in The Time Machine.
The dark old version will rule the darknet and the evil world, while the small new population of fresh android devices will live in the clouds above enlightened with solid security patches and amazing safety and privacy features.

I still think a more accurate measure would be what percentage of that number shipped with Android 9 V what number got the update from Android 8?
I've got:
9 year old phone runs 2.2 never updated. samsung apollo GT-I8500
5 year old phone runs 4.4.2 shipped with 4.1. samsung S4 mini
5 year old tablet runs 5.0 shipped with 4.2 but had all the updates as stock android. Tegra note 7
4 year old tablet runs 7.0 shipped with 5.0 but had all the updates as stock android. Nvidia shield
9 month old phone runs 9.0 shipped with 7.1.1 but had all the updates as stock android. Nokia 8

Google does not enforce it's policy, so nothing will change. I'm sold on stock android now, sorry Samsung and others!

Every phone should be made to accept at least 1 upgrade and manufacturers should have to agree to it.That would help the situation.

Why just one? It should be 5!
I do agree. Except there's no way to get every manufacturer to agree, and each new iteration of Android seems to require a hardware upgrade too. My suspicion is that there is an agreement, and it's planned obsolescence. Funny thing is, I don't see environmentalists putting up much of a stink about it. E-wastes should concern all of us, as much if not more than plastic.
