Competition is good. Flash has long been a common standard for web video and games, but has also been criticized as resource-hungry, unstable, and lacking in features. Response to these issues has typically been slow, as there was no multimedia platform capable of challenging Flash.

This is changing, however, with the rise of HTML 5 and the war of words between Adobe and Apple. Flash video was recently improved by adding support for GPU acceleration, and it appears the platform will soon be taking another major step forward by including 3D graphics. Speculation about the addition of the new API was confirmed when observers noticed that the Max 2010 conference schedule includes a presentation that will unveil the specifics about the addition of 3D.

To be clear, this refers to 3D graphics as we have known them for the last decade and is not stereoscopic 3D. There are otherwise no details available about what features will be included. However, this new development is guaranteed to have a major impact on gaming. Flash games remain incredibly popular and the inclusion of 3D will unlock genres, such as the first person shooter, that developers have so far been unable to explore using Adobe’s product.

So 3D is the new thing but it is impossible to look at 3D for the same amount of a 2D screen. So is this the new way to get people (mostly Americans) to stop watching so much TV and play less Games?

3D as in video game 3D..not as in Imax 3D(you know..with the glasses"

They'll probably be slow to introduce it for OS X, and when they do it will take that 10 hour battery life down to 90 minutes.

I meant in general 3D TV's and 3D game systems, not so much for the flash player.

To have the real 3D effect without the glasses would mean the pictures are rapidly moving and the human eye can only take so much rapid movement.

So is it the new way to get people (mostly Americans) to stop watching so much TV and play less Games?

3D works because your eyes, being separated by a few inches, each see a slightly different image. This allows your brain to automatically triangulate the image and meld it together. You see it as a single image even though your eyes are actually seeing two different images!

What your brain does with the differences between the two images given to it is turn that difference into binocular depth perception.

Your eyes also use lens-focus to intuit distance, but that cannot give you the depth-perception effect, only help confirm it.

The 3DS works on the principle of parallax, meaning it gives a different image to each eye, tricking your brain into perceiving depth where there is none. It does this by using a special lens over the image which tightly controls the angle at which the image can be seen.

What's happening is your brain is using the illusion of movement to perform a depth calculation. You could actually extract the dual-image from each of these images, put it into a viewfinder setup to provide each image to the correct eye, and you'd see the image in true 3D.

So in-turn it is two images for every frame in a rapid movement (in a left-right motion) allowing the picture to have a 3D effect. However there are filters which give make the 3D effect.

If you are center then you could watch it all day, however if somebody isn't center they will get frequent headaches. It is extremely dangerous to walk and play the 3Ds for it throws off your depth perception.

(If you knew how crap worked then you would understand kyosuke's question)

Unity3D (http://unity3d.com/) is a good competitor. Check out interstellar marines, a full fps running in your browser!

dude. unity3d is a completely different genre. its not flash, its more difficult, and uses completely different scripting. know what you are talking about before you post.

Unity3d is NOT a different genre at all. It's purpose is to do the precisely the same thing - bring 3D and 3D games and experiences into the browser.
