All vehicles will be required to have enhanced automated emergency braking by 2029

Yeah, but probably in that situation, better that the car prevents you from moving than you end up committing manslaughter because you didn't follow traffic directions. Hopefully the crowd would understand and you'd just be stuck for awhile.
Traffic directions? They're blocking the road and essentially holding people hostage. Better they tell these people 'you're on your own' and natural selection weeds them out.

So what I'm hearing you say is that murder is okay if you **** up and take a wrong turn and end up delayed? Yeah, I feel like that sometimes when I get stuck in traffic too, but I think you're taking this to the extreme.

You're not hearing him correctly. A more accurate transcription of his remarks would be, "if you're being held hostage by a violent mob, you're allowed to engage in all means necessary to extricate yourself."

And the "mob" (which is probably a protest that permits were obtained for) is probably upset at you because you bringing a vehicle into an area intended for pedestrians only is going to be seen as a threat to them. Especially if you try to "extricate yourself" by running over people. Most of the time driving a vehicle through people is going to be the biggest threat to life. Maybe take a minute to think if you were at a protest (or MAGA rally if you prefer) and some asshat starts driving their car through the crowd because they're scared and don't want to be delayed.

Is this a bad joke? No permits were obtained for this riot, nor -- even if they had obtained a permit -- would one be issued to allow them to block busy city streets.

Also, if you notice in the video, the only car that was attacked was the ***** that tried driving through the crowd. So either way, if you remember from driver's ed, pedestrians always have the right of way and you don't try to run them over. If you're late for whatever, that sucks, but you don't try to kill people because you're stuck.

You mean, the car attacked was the one that tried to escape? I can see you defending the terrorists at Entebbe: "Your honor, the only hostages they shot were those who attempted to flee!"

Your attempts to blame the victim here in the face of multiple crimes by a violent crowd are beyond the pale. While the driver in this case escaped, others aren't so lucky:

Jun 2009: "Two Cars Attacked, Driver Beaten by Crowd Celebrating 'Juneteenth' in Milwaukee"

Jul 2020: "BLM Rioter Shoots SUV Driver as He Tries To Escape Angry Mob Surrounding Vehicle..."

Aug 2020: "Portland Mob Pulls Driver from Car, Brutally Knocks Him Unconscious..."

Oct 2023: "St. Louis driver pulled from car and beaten during Downtown chaos..."

Rhode Island: "Woman pulled from car, attacked by mob..."

Well, you know what they say about arguing with trolls on the internet. I figure I should just stop. I could show you an equal number of references of people who drove through crowds of people injuring or killing them, but what's the point. Your mind is already made up and you'll never see things from the other side, as if you were a person in a crowd where someone tried running you over. I guess you'd just be cool with that though.

Remember kids, any new tech is fun and exciting, but sometimes the cost of the new tech is not worth the benefit of the new tech. The field of study devoted to this is called Economics and it is surprisingly underrated by armchair experts.
I don't know if you were old enough to remember how Lee Iacocca P&M'd about including seat belts in cars back in the day. Then the government mandated them and clever boy Iacocca used it as marketing for the cars that the company he headed at the time was selling.

This **** flows two ways. P&M about it, or use it as marketing and sell more cars - whatever the cost. Whatever you hear about the "economics" of the situation is usually just crappy car makers P&M'ing about their bottom line -at whatever cost including to their drivers and people that may also be affected.

The economics of the situation is not worth the lives that are lost.

What does that have to do with this? You believe that, because someone, somewhere else drove threw a crowd that people have a right to illegally block streets and hold drivers hostage for hours, then violently attack them if they try to leave? Are you serious?

you'll never see things from the other side, as if you were a person in a crowd where someone tried running you over.
No one in that video "tried to run pedestrians over". The driver could have easily hit a dozen or more people ... had they been trying. But they hit no one -- they were merely trying to escape a violent mob.

I can’t stand these “safety features” that take physical control of the car to brake or jiggle the wheel or whatever. Our Honda Accord tried to do the braking thing to me the other night while I was simply driving down the road after it got confused by an oncoming car that had a headlight out. Other times it’s always jiggling the wheel whenever the lines on the road aren’t perfectly painted. Drives me bonkers but it’s her car not mine so I can’t just turn them off.

This is a VERY misleading article. "... to develop and equip vehicles with technology that is currently unavailable."

Strange, because here's a list of some cars that commonly come equipped with Automatic Emergency Braking (AEB) as either a standard feature or an available option:

  1. Toyota Corolla
  2. Honda Accord
  3. Subaru Forester
  4. Ford Fusion
  5. Volvo XC90
  6. BMW 3 Series
  7. Audi A4
  8. Mercedes-Benz E-Class
  9. Volkswagen Golf
  10. Tesla Model 3

But what's interesting are all the nay sayers. I bet they said the same about: ABS, lead-free gas, seat belts, ANY safety feature in any car, Daytime Driving lights, etc.

Remember kids, any new technology is immediately suspicious and should be disregarded out of hand - and before doing some research!!

I have a Honda Accord and the feature does not work very well. It can't tell that a car is in a right turn lane and will hit the brakes on me. It also can't tell that cars are in the process of making right turns that will complete before I will get there and will brake. Two lanes in the same direction on a curve, yea it can't figure that out either.

I turned all those features off very quickly. Same experience - they are not very reliable. I really enjoyed the speed limit feature, it told me the speed limit was 65 when I was in a school zone and it told me the speed limit was 25 when I was on the interstate.

I’m glad that they’re developing advanced safety features, but too many of these are not ready for prime time and I feel like a guinea pig.
