A couple of months after launching in the US, Amazon has launched its ebook subscription service Kindle Unlimited in the UK, offering unlimited access to a catalog of more than 650,000 e-books (50,000 less than what it offers in the US) and over 2000 audiobooks.

Titles include bestsellers such as J.K. Rowling’s Harry Potter series, Suzanne Collins’ Hunger Games trilogy, 2013 Man Booker prize winner The Luminaries, and more. That said it's worth pointing out that the service is made up mostly of ebooks from Kindle Direct Publishing Select, a platform that allows self-published authors to offer their books up for the ebook subscription service.

“Our US customers have shown us how much they love the opportunity to discover new authors and genres, and now we’re delighted to offer the same freedom to our customers in the UK,” said Jorrit Van der Meulen, Amazon’s vice president, Kindle EU.

Amazon is offering a 30-day free trial of Kindle Unlimited, following which it will cost £7.99 per month. The service is available via Kindle e-readers, as well as its apps on Android, iOS, Windows Phone, BlackBerry, PC, Mac, and Windows 8.

The launch comes around a week after some of the world’s most famous authors, including Malcolm Gladwell, Stephen King, Michael Pollan, and Donna Tartt, wrote to the internet giant's board, claiming that the company’s tactics have driven down the authors’ sales by "at least 50% and in some cases as much as 90%".

Amazon also recently updated its Kindle line of devices with five new tablets and two new e-readers.
