Analyst: Mini LED tech will come to the 11-inch iPad Pro, MacBooks next year

Forward-looking: The latest iPad Pro has been praised for its gorgeous Mini LED screen, but it's only available on the more expensive 12.9-inch model. According to a new report, however, Apple is set to introduce a Mini LED version of its 11-inch tablet next year, when it will also add the technology to its latest MacBooks.

At its April Spring Loaded event, Apple confirmed long-running rumors that the next iPad Pro would feature Mini LED tech and the M1 chip. The larger, 12.9-inch tablet boasts the same Liquid Retina XDR display found in the $5,000 ProDisplay XDR for the Mac Pro. The 10,000 Mini LED touch display features 2,596 local dimming zones, 1,000 nits brightness with 1,600 nits peak, and a million-to-one contrast ratio.

In a note to investors (via AppleInsider), renowned Apple analysts Ming-Chi Kuo said the Liquid Retina Display would be trickling down to the 11-inch iPad next year. "We predict that new products equipped with Mini LED displays in 2022 include 11-inch and 12.9-inch iPad Pro," Kuo writes.

The analyst believes Apple will push the display technology to a number of its devices. Kuo said 14-inch and a 16-inch Mini LED-sporting MacBook Pros will go into mass production in the third quarter of 2021, and a redesigned MacBook Air with a Liquid Retina XDR display will arrive in 2022.

Mini LED production was reportedly behind supply constraints for the 12.9-inch iPad Pro before launch, and it still has a 2 to 3 week shipping time when ordered from Apple's website, while the 11-inch model is listed as 3 to 5 days. Hopefully, the issues will be resolved by the time more Mini LED Apple devices go into production.

The smaller sized tablet getting the better screen makes it a little bit better since its a lot more portable if you want to retouch or edit some images on the go.

It will still be a shame you can't get proper OS features to go along with it and must suffer through ipados nonsense lack of features but hey, the 11" and the mini are more firmly "tablets" and if you must have professional level screen on the go that's gonna be the best option.
 
Not sure why this is news. It's just a better backlight it's not a non-organic and better version of OLED like micro-LED is.


Most consumer mini-led displays have dimming zones in the hundreds - and by the time you're above 100k (the minimum for no noticeable dimming artifacts,) the cost is so high, you might as well install an OLED.

Apples will be an order-of-magnitude better than consumer, but at 3000, it's still the equivalent of a 50x60 display; THAT IS LOWER RESOLUTION THAN THE TI-82 CALCULATOR WAS

I'm well aware of what mini-led is, but how is it news? 3000 lighting zones for eight million LEDs isn't that impressive. It's better, but it's not better than OLED in every measurement. Micro-LED would have been news.

How is something Apple hasn't release going to be so much better "than consumer" before anyone has seen it?

Jumping up from a 300 (15x20) zone display to 3000 zones (50x60) is usually regarded-as a massive improvement.

One is a lot closer to a calculator's graphics mode, while the other is less lines of text data than could be displayed on the terrible Commodore Vic-20 (22 x 23).

I'm just saying that there will be no point to chasing more zones than that in ssub-5000 display, so we will have to see how well thir compromise works (until they can manage OLED upgrades in 5-10 years)
