Another California Apple Store smash-and-grab caught on video

  1. The Apple Store in Santa Rosa, California was hit on Sunday by six individuals wearing hoodies. The robbery followed the same MO as previous thefts at other Apple outlets in California. The suspects perform what basically amounts to a smash-and-grab, except there is no need to smash since Apple’s display products aren’t under glass.

The only difference between Santa Rosa and the other robberies is that this time there were six individuals (usually there are only four) and one of them got caught.

A bystander who goes by the handle “Gooneryoda” on Reddit caught the theft on video. He was also able to record security and mall patrons wrestling one of the suspects to the ground in another part of the building.

“I was at the Santa Rosa Plaza, and I saw these six guys in jeans and hoodies making a their [sic] way to the Apple Store. I knew something was about to go down, so I recorded it,” he said on the r/Apple subreddit.

Santa Rosa Police reported on its Facebook page that “several thieves entered the Apple Store at the Santa Rosa Plaza mall and ran away with multiple devices.”

This is the second time the Santa Rosa store has been hit — the last time was in August. Police did not have an estimated value of the items, but previous heists have all averaged in the $25,000-$30,000 range. The previous Santa Rosa theft was valued at $35,000.

This is only one of more than a dozen similar robberies that have taken place in California Apple Stores this year. Other locations include Fresno (twice), San Luis Obispo, Walnut Creek, Santa Clara, Roseville, and several other cities throughout the state.

Police have been able to arrest two crews involved in carrying out the crimes, but have still not determined whether they are connected to a larger ring. Lt. Robert Boll of the Burlingame Police Department told AppleInsider it could be an organized crime ring, but could just as easily be a string of copycats.

"They see how easy it is when the news plays the video," said Boll.

I like his underwear. I wear a similar brand myself, although I am not a shower.

They should have pulled his pants all the way down. It's hard to run with your pants around your ankles, as many have discovered when her husband comes home early.

The thief was lucky to be captured by civilians. If it had been cops, seeing as he was black and unarmed there's a good chance they'd have shot him in the back a few times.

You mean when they give cops a hard time and try killing the cops that have family's? Cops are actually easy on Blacks because we all know if the cuffs are too tight there will be rioting and looting and 24/7 news milking the "subject." Wanna see the truth visit THEGUDDA and tell me what you see from those vids. Buddy don't let main stream media fool you. Can you taste the truth & reality? Can you handle it?

He wasn't prepared to run with his pants down. See what happens when you don't dress properly. You can never get anything done.

Just add him to your mute list. People like that fall into one of two categories, they're either the people the cops are chasing or they have no real experience with cops, criminals, or the media. Not worth the time or attention.

Shouldn't Apple stores have some security? People obviously won't do anything. Better to just record for hits on YouTube.

Maybe he should just try not being a criminal. That seems to work pretty well for most people of all races.

What's really unfortunate is that this guy most likely comes from a culture that promotes absentee fathers, law breaking and disrespect for the rule of law. These ideals only serve to perpetuate the lawlessness, violence and incarceration of that culture's members. A low percentage of children are going to turn out great when they are immersed in that culture.

I'll agree that Apple products are expensive, but how are they overpriced? The law of supply and demand dictate subsequent price, not subjective opinion. Even if a product is inferior to competitors a manufacturer is going to sell it at a price that maximizes its margins. Ask too much, you won't move the product. Ask too little you'll lose potential profits. Last I checked Apple products are moving like mad, so seems to me they got the pricing about right.

That said, I do agree that the iPhones especially have moved out of my price range. However, they are on par with Samsung's flagships soI guess I'm just stuck with using older phones now. lol

Me too. So is Samsung. I can't afford a new phone these days. I have to go two to three years back to find on affordable enough. That or go with a cheap Chinese knock off like Huawei. It's ridiculous.
