Why it matters: At $399 with modern internals, a familiar design and legacy authentication tech, the iPhone SE 2 could be a solid driver for growth for Apple and help offset declining sales in the category. Some people just want a fast phone without all the bells and whistles and this could be that.

Ming-Chi Kuo is one of the most respected Apple analysts in the game. When he speaks, people listen. His latest note to investors sheds a bit more light – and validity – on a topic we have previously touched on, the upcoming iPhone SE 2.

As previously reported by Nikkei Asian Review and verified by Kuo, the iPhone SE 2 will utilize the iPhone 8 chassis packed with Apple’s A13 Bionic chip. Kuo also claims the handset will ship with 3GB of RAM and could launch as early as the first quarter of 2020.

The noted analyst believes Apple could ship as many as 40 million units next year, adding that he thinks it’ll be the “best upgrade choice” for the estimated 100 million people that are still using Apple’s older iPhone 6 and iPhone 6 Plus.

As MacRumors points out, it is believed that this segment has little desire for features like Face ID and multiple rear-facing cameras. Accordingly, the iPhone SE 2 may stick with Touch ID and a single rear-facing camera.

Pricing could be a significant factor in the iPhone SE 2’s overall success. When new, the iPhone 8 commanded $699 while the iPhone SE went for $399.

Replace the battery and enjoy again. I did so a couple of months ago for an iPhone 6 and it's sooo nice to have a real battery again.

I replaced the battery on my son's SE, but of course it was an aftermarket and the battery only lasted about 6 months before it needed replacing again. I still have the OEM battery and he's been through 2 replacements now... The next iOS will probably not support it anyways, so I figured it's just time to move on. I got my money's worth out of it.

I quite like my SE but the battery started crapping out after just 1.5 years or light use. 2.5 years later I can barely get a day out of it. I used to be able to go 2-3 days between charges. Really disappointed in Apple's crappy battery.

I don't care for all these large phones. Sure the screens are beautiful to look at but I don't consume lots of media on my phone except music and it spends most of its time in my pocket. I don't particularly want a tablet in my pocket especially when I'm working. I really hope the 4" screen will continue with the SE2 assuming it comes to fruition. I've considered an iPhone 8 with the 4.7" screen but that is a little too big for me. I didn't care for a 5" Android phone in my pocket I don't think 0.3" is going to help much.

Honestly I think if they just take the current SE, make the edges a little more rounded/smooth, and just put new tech inside that would be perfect. Keep the 4" screen (preferably OLED but I know that may be cost prohivitive), good'ol home button with fingerprint reader on the front, and normal bezels (none of this edge to edge bezle-less screen crap).

Add me to the disappointed list if it's another 4.7" phone. Where did all the 4" and smaller ones go? Android is no longer an option for this size either.

My 6S Plus is almost 4 years old now, but it's working perfectly and feels quite new and snapoy even with the latest IOS 13.1.2.

I really see no need for me to upgrade for another 3-4 years!
