Arrests have been made in several countries related to the break-in to Valve’s network, theft of the Half-Life 2 source code, and release of the source code on the Internet.

“Within a few days of the announcement of the break-in, the online gaming community had tracked down those involved,” said Gabe Newell, Valve’s CEO. “It was extraordinary to watch how quickly and how cleverly gamers were able to unravel what are traditionally unsolvable problems for law enforcement related to this kind of cyber-crime.”

Thousands of tips were received related to the criminal activities, with a core group of people who were able to analyze and backtrack from these clues. Subsequent to these individuals being identified, Valve has been working with various national authorities to prepare cases against those involved, leading to these arrests.

Good find and "Cool!"

If they hadn't stolen that sourcecode we might have seen hl2 sooner (though not at the official release date that was last autumn)...

Also cool/interesting how the gaming community helped get these people...

BTW: Where did you find this info? (Would like to read more about it)

I think some gamers tend to be hackers aswell. Think about the number of CD hacks that come out and the like. Someone does it, and they're pretty smart to de-compile and exec and compile it back without affecting gameplay.

I'm sure a handful of these do more than this and I bet you they're responsible for the information leading to the arrests etc. I must admit, my hats off to that underground gaming community, you've done every gamer some justice.

steal

what if they've stolen the source code. forge it.

well sure a hanful took the source code, but the others prob did the catching, I doubt the entire uunderground gaming comunity stole the code... Cathing the one (s) responsible is more impressive than stealing source code imo.
