my wife's laptop is getting all clunky and slow, and I think the half life of the current windows installation is about done. I was going to do a windows repair to see if that fixed the issue, and I get a prompt to enter an adminstrator password. Well, I never set up a password on this so I can't figure out what it wants......any ideas?

the laptop is an HP pavillion and I am using the xp sp2 disc that came with it.

it sounds like when you booted the XP Cd you chose the "repair a windows XP installation using recovery console press R" option. doing that will result in being prompted for a password. instead boot from the Cd and choose "to setup windows XP now press enter" then accept the license agreement. at the next screen you will be given the option "to repair the selected Windows XP installation press R" this usually doesnt result in the demand for a password.

for a guide on this method go here.
