AT&T announced today (pdf) the welcome addition of six new areas covered by its 4G LTE network. The carrier also reminded us that 77 more markets are slated to receive some 4G love as soon as this summer.

When it comes to 4G LTE coverage, AT&T is only outclassed by Verizon; Big Red's LTE data network currently services 486 markets across the United States. AT&T, by comparison, covers 182 markets after including today's six additions; however, AT&T likes to tout its widely available HSPA+ network as a suitable fallback where 4G LTE remains unavailable.

AT&T boldly claims it has the "nation's fastest 4G LTE network" and that it operates the nation's largest "4G" (non-LTE) network -- this of course includes its slower but expansive HSPA+ coverage.

Other carriers, namely Sprint and T-Mobile are far behind AT&T and Verizon in terms of 4G LTE coverage. However, both companies have continued to invest in building out their high-speed data infrastructure. T-Mobile just recently announced the first time it's offering 4G LTE coverage (12 markets so far) while Sprint already covers more than 70 itself.

AT&T's latest additions include: Jackson, Tenn., Kalamazoo, Mo., Napa, Calif., Orangeburg, S.C., Rocky Mount-Wilson, N.C., and Santa Rosa-Petaluma, Calif.

By this summer, AT&T plans to add the following areas:

Florence / Muscle Shoals, Ala., Huntsville, Ala., Monroeville / Evergreen, Ala., Troy / Greenville, Ala., Tuscaloosa, Ala., Flagstaff, Ariz., Chico, Calif., Merced, Calif., Visalia, Calif., Dover, Del., Lake City, Fla., Ocala, Fla., Hancock, Ga., Jefferson / Commerce (Jackson County), Ga., Valdosta, Ga., Davenport, Iowa, Champaign, Ill., Rockford, Ill., Columbus, Ind., Fort Wayne, Ind., Manhattan, Kan., Topeka, Kan., Elizabethtown, Ky., New Iberia, La., Shreveport, La., Cape Cod, Mass., Leonardtown, Md., Flint, Mich., Lansing, Mich., Muskegon, Mich., Saginaw, Mich, Duluth, Minn., Cape Girardeau, Mo., Columbia, Mo., Biloxi/Gulfport, Miss., Corinth / New Albany, Miss., Greenwood / Cleveland, Miss., Meridian / Philadelphia, Miss., Asheville, N.C., Goldsboro, N.C., Kinston, N.C., Portsmouth, N.H., Atlantic City, N.J. Millville, N.J., Southern NJ Shore Points, N.J., Farmington, N.M., Gallup, N.M., Batavia, N.Y., Cortland, N.Y., Seneca Falls, N.Y., Dayton, Ohio, Wooster, Ohio, Youngstown, Ohio, Salem, Ore., Williamsport, Penn., Anderson, SC., Chattanooga, Tenn., Cookeville, Tenn., Athens, Texas, Brownsville-Harlingen, Texas, Corsicana, Texas, Huntsville, Texas, Laredo, Texas, Lufkin-Nacogdoches, Texas, McAllen, Texas, Paris, Texas, Sherman-Denison, Texas, Texarkana, Texas, Victoria, Texas, St. Croix, U.S. Virgin Islands, St. Thomas, US Virgin Islands, Petersburg, Va., Roanoke, Va., Spokane, Wash., Huntington, W.V., Morgantown, W. Currently, AT&T's 4G LTE network reaches 170 million people. The company expects to cover over 300 million people by the end of 2014.

About 55 percent of AT&T's contract customers have a smartphone that is capable of 4G (LTE or otherwise).

Finally good to see Huntsville AL getting it this year, been waiting forever! I had it in Nashville and it was fantastic compared to standard 4G here now.

AT&T is consistently growing in us Cell Phone market, specially facilitating the its client as wi-fi and 4G network hypes.

As a current AT&T customer I can't bring myself to stay with them and be stuck in a contract again. T-Mobile's unlimited data seems like a better deal to me, even if their service isn't as refined.
