Avast: 1 out of 8 malware attacks come from USB devices

AVG Is good, but...
AVG has too many processes overloading the CPU. he has at least 9 processes (in last version) ...
while "Avira Antivir 9" has 3 and Avast and Comodo haveonly have 2 processes!

I have a suggestion for this problem: "Autorun Eater" ... it's great and it´s free... see http://oldmcdonald.wordpress.com/

i have a suggestion as well: tell microsoft that you wont buy such easy to infect OS for your home use. it might help to change things

Yeah! Autorun Eater is very good program for stop malware in USB Keys. You can do this too: with "Tweak UI" go to config of My Computer then Autoplay and then types, Uncheck "Enable Autoplay for removable drives" option. You can get "Tweak UI" from Filehippo: http://www.filehippo.com/es/download_tweakui/

"Lol if you have no antivirus to tell you that you havwe a virus, how are you sure you don't have one? Having antivirus is a must, I use avast but AVG is great as well. Its free and there is no reason to not have it. "but it slows down PC" You need to upgrade your PC then. ;) "

Apparently everyone here runs computers from 1990 that get bogged down if an AV is installed, or either pretends to say they have no need for AV as their surfing habits are safe. What a bunch of bull!! What kind of crappy hardware or AV's do you guys run so that your PC's get so slow they become unusable? Look around and get something decent. And here I thought it was only MAC users who were pretencious enough to think they don't need an AV...

It's not only Viruses, it's malware and trojans too. Nowadays you get them by simply visiting a website, inserting a USB stick, clicking the wrong post in Facebook, et.... Ever heard of Stuxnet? How do you think it started?
They even said it so here. Kaspersky's website got hit. You'd visit it and get a bogus popup saying you need to protect your PC and if you click it you get infected.

And come on, the need to install a firewall? What bull is that? How will that help you from getting infected? You think that keeps you safe when visiting a harmful website and clicking on the wrong link? If you use Kazaa or LimeWire, guess what, you already added it to your allowed application list on the firewall, so it will do little less.
Anyone using at least XP SP2 already has one by default (unless you run another OS). If you run Win and have the need to install a firewall you're clearly not doing something right (unless you want to improve on the crappy firewall built into XP and give you more control. But then again, almost everyone here is saying "Get a firewall, it prevents you getting infected"). If you run XP, the firewall by default blocks almost all incoming traffic, but nothing going out (only Vista and 7 will block both ways).
If you already manage to surf the internet and click on links, how do you think the trojans, viruses and malware get on your machine? At least Win 7 has UAC, which does a little bit more if something wants to install itself, but in most cases is also useless for specialised attacks.

see? every clever user knows how to deal with it but you have to either download or buy third party software. so what is really the problem then?

Use Microsoft Security Essentials and CCleaner often and you are pretty much safe.No fuss about it!

I've noticed that atleast 75% of usbs that I come across (those owned by classmates) has a virus on them. They all seem pretty harmless and easy to remove after a simple format.

for usb is panda usb vaccine. best av in detection is panda is 2011 and g data is 2011 i think. vipre is light, malwarebytes is good on scan, opera is the safest.

"Thankfully i havnt noticed any virus since past 1 year. I have no antivirus or firewall installed."

looool How stupid is that? You don't have an anti-virus installed and are surprised you never noticed having a virus? How would you even know you're infected???

"a good firewall which will block all viruses and malwares"

That is not what firewalls are for....

Someone should disconnect your computer from the internet, I'm sure that's where all the botnets are coming from

haha! this "Guest" has no idea :)

I also, do not use Anti-Virus Software, I have Windows 7 Pro 64-bit and A Watchguard Firewall (http://www.watchguard.com/products/xtm-2/overview.asp)

I do have installed Microsoft Security Essencials but have it disabled and so far have done one scan of which I had no Virus's.

The truth is, as long as your up to date with windows updates, use a secure browser (FF is what I use) and do not navigate to dodgy sites, its almost impossible to get virus's.

I'm guessing this "Guest" visits Porn sites a bit too often ;)

The truth is that you might not know your system is infected until you actually run a scan after updating your antivirus program. Sometimes your A/V may not be able to detect certain new virus infections until the programmers get to know of it, write a solution for it, you download as an update then install before the A/V program can then recognise the threat.

The most dangerous part of it is that you will think that since your system is not slow or malfunctioning or that no programs are having issues starting up that you are actually safe. WRONG. Threats nowadays have gone beyond trojans and malwares. What about tracking cookies "tracking all your activities, spywares and stealers that steal credit card details, pins, passwords, account details e.t.c." You should know that when a programmer writes a virus, his intention is not to enrich the antivirus vendors, since he knows no one will come to him to buy an A/V since he is not known, he will rather make his virus work for him: STEAL CHEAT, SPY, SPAM, and do all sorth of stealthy mischiefs that you wont even know its there.

In short get some even if its going to be free antivirus and make sure you update regularly. That reduces, yes reduces the number of infections. None totally cleans all.

NOTE: No antivirus program is overall best. Just make sure you update which ever you have regularly.

Or get a decent Firewall so when A virus tries to reach the outside world it will be blocked and then you get notified that a lot of traffic is coming from your machine? then you A) know you have a virus and B) can run a scan and remove it, all the while the virus has done...nothing?

Or, you can simply disable autorun on all removable drives in Group Policy Editor, described here

You can do this too: with "Tweak UI" go to config of My Computer then Autoplay and then types, Uncheck "Enable Autoplay for removable drives" option. You can get "Tweak UI" from Filehippo: http://www.filehippo.com/es/download_tweakui/[/quote]

A better place to get TweakUI is directly from Microsoft, here

There is actually no reason for any responsible PC user not to have an antivirus and anti-malware program installed. Anyone of the top freeware anti-virus programs like Avast, AVG, Avira and Microsoft Security Essentials can do a decent job of protecting your PC. I remember reading an article about the four programs above and that these four freeware programs comprise 42% of the anti-virus market. If you have some extra cash and you actually like the idea of paying for your PC protection, then get Norton or some other name brand anti-virus program.

8 out of 8 malware attacks comes when I plug in my usb in college then bring it back home.Luckily avast pro blocks them all & my PC would be messed up big time because i see my friend's PC who also do the same thing.Even after like formatting the PC once a week the college PC's are always infected.

well i think this is the easiest way for a malware to propagate, especially if your pc do not have protection from autorun exploits. based on experience most pc's with eset are the most vulnerable in my place

I'd say in a home environment, the number would be around 5 out of 8 coming from USB. I've had tons and tons of viruses coming from my sister's flashdrive which she freely and nonsensically plugs in and out of PCs in her university. Lol
