AVG free 9.0 used 90 percent cpu?

I just built a new computer, with 6 gigs ram. Intel i7 975 3.33 ghz. ASUS Pt6 deluxe v2 motherboard windows 7 x64 ultimate edition. When i started a scan with avg, it used about 90 percent of my cpu at its peak. THere is no reason for it to be like that. Why would it use so much cpu?

AVG and to a lesser extent Avira will use what is available if you let it run by itself. they back off if you break in by using another program or app. you can go into task manager and set the affinity ( what cores it can use to operate on) and the priority (from low to real time) to reign it in.

AVG has been notorious for hogging resources, why not try another antivirus program?
