I think this is great, especially since the rear windows of cars over the years have shrunk a ton.

So you are saying, that due to poor design of some vehicles everyone should have to pay for another piece of electronic gizmo which will just be another thing to go wrong at some future date with further costs, usually at the point where the car has passed into the hands of those who can least afford it. How about buying a car that you CAN see out of ?
I had a hired car which had to have a rear view camera because of its appalling rear window design. The idea of looking forward and down at a small screen while going in reverse instead of looking where I was going struck me as both stupid and freaky. Its a real distraction when the driver should be not only looking through the rear window but also be aware of other things happening in the area into which they are driving, something the human brain is good at rather than a prescribed field of vision on a small screen. I'll never buy a car with such poor rear view. .

The cost is probably so minimal anyways. Car companies just charge a fortune for them since it is "new technology" and it is a good opportunity to make money.

My car has all sorts of cameras including a multi-angle rear camera and it's fantastic!!!

Once upon a time, you could buy a car with a rear windscreen that you could actually see through.
