Boot from usb hard disk

I have a usb hdd closure. I tried to plug in and install window xp in order to make the computer boot window xp from usb hdd. But window XP unable to access to this hdd. Is anyone know how to install window XP to a usb hard disk? i have using laptop IBM thinpad T42.
 
In order for this to be able to work the laptop MBoard has to support booting from a USB device...Check your manuf. manual or their website for this info.

My IBM laptop is supporting USB HDD boot. But when I try to install window XP, window XP setup software cannt allow my to format my usb hdd. can i install the window XP from somewhere else and then plug into my laptop usb port and boot from there?
