    to paraphrase

    the problem was originally this

    "Line: 539
    Char: 2
    Error: Invalid argument.
    Code: 0 URL: res://C:\WINDOWS\SYSTEM\SHDOCLC.DLL/preview.dlg "

but in the mean time, i want to re rememer how to terminate a service, so i can replace and reregister the file

Boot into Safe Mode: Start> Run> services.msc> right click on the Service> Properties> change Startup type to Disabled> Stop the Service.

Always check the dependency tab when changing a Service. That's why working in Safe Mode is best.
