CD Drive Intermitently disappearing

My Cd drive is 7 years old .Now i purchased new PC and connected this drive to it.But it is disappearing intermitently. My system is
motherboard ASUS M2NPV-VM
Processor AMD Athelon X2 4200
OS Win XP SP1

Kindly suggest some solution

Replace this CD drive and get yourself a new CD-ROM or CD-RW or better yet DVD-RW/CD-RW or DL one. These are cheaper now than before.
