I just finished building my first computer, and was installing XP. popped the cd into the tray, and was told by windows I didn't have a hard drive. Little did I know that Windows and SATA drives don't get along to well at first, however I dind't know this at the time, and thought it was a cable loose or something, so I took the CD out, turned the computer off, but left the CD tray open...when I turned it back on and put the CD back into the tray and got the CD back in, nothing happened, the light turns on...and stays on, and I hear the disc inside whirring, but nothing comes up. Any ideas?

it could be type of windows xp cd you have.
i think your windows xp cd is the type where u need 6 floppy boot discs... u can download a small software where it creates those 6 discs at a push of a button.

if u have windows xp professional then click HERE

if u have windows xp home edition then click HERE

gl m8 :)

It sounds to me like you got the CD put in after Boot From CD was tried. Nothing should have happened to your CD drive if you left it out and turned off the power. It should have just closed again when you turned it back on and hit the button.

Try rebooting again and see if it goes.
